Marilyn lived a full life of nearly 100 years and generously shared the many gifts she received. “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
- 1 Peter 4:10
Marilyn’s remarkable journey took her from small-town Minnesota to careers in music education and advertising, international experiences overseas in Africa and the Middle East, and eventually farming near Danvers, Minnesota. She later settled in Benson, where she served in the superintendent’s office of the Benson Public Schools.
Born in Staples, Minnesota, to Edwin and Esther, Marilyn graduated from Staples High School and earned a degree in music education from the University of Minnesota. She taught vocal music in Blue Earth before moving to Minneapolis in 1953 to work for Campbell-Mithun Advertising Agency. In 1962, she married Dr. Lawrence Inman and accompanied him abroad as he taught agronomy. They returned to the United States in 1970 and began farming.
A dedicated member of Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson, Marilyn served as choir accompanist for more than 31 years. She also accompanied vocal groups, including the Octachords, Sing 4 Joy, and Friends, arranging hundreds of songs. Through music, she built lasting friendships and brought joy to countless others.
Later in life, Marilyn moved to Scandi Haven, where she treasured friendships, continued her musical activities, kept up hair appointments, and appreciated the warmth of the thoughtful staff. In 2023, she relocated to Summit Place in Eden Prairie to be closer to family. There, she appreciated the welcoming community, manicures, outings, and attentive, compassionate caregivers who made her feel at home.
As the matriarch of her family, Marilyn made everyone feel valued through her thoughtful attention and the beautiful quilts she created in colors and patterns chosen by each loved one. She exemplified faith, resilience, and grace as she navigated life’s challenges, including the Great Depression, World War II, the pandemic, and a stroke. Beyond the piano, Marilyn found fulfillment in reading, sewing, puzzles, and quilting. An avid learner with an impressive command of trivia, she could solve even the most challenging crossword puzzles. She especially loved reading historical fiction. Her creativity produced more than 30 quilts and wall hangings, some of which were award-winning at the MN State Fair, along with multiple wedding dresses. A cherished baptismal quilt, first used by her great-granddaughter, will continue through generations.
Marilyn is survived by her daughters: Barbara (Michael) and Cynthia; grandchildren: Nichole (Danny), Josh (Drago), Sarah, and Meghan; and great-grandchildren: Charles, Benjimen, Scarlette, and Jacxon. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant son.
Her legacy lives on through faith, music, creativity, and unwavering devotion to family. The melodies she arranged, the quilts she lovingly crafted, and the encouragement she gave future generations, especially in pursuing education, will remain enduring reminders of a life well lived.
