CoreCivic sells Appleton prison
After the Prairie Correctional Facility was closed in 2010, state Legislators would tour the prison as arguments about is use by the state Department of Corrections took place. However, the Legislature refused to put state prisoners in a privately-owned prison.
One day after it announced it had signed a contract with the federal Immigration & Customs Enforcement agency to house detainees at the Prairie Correctional Facility in Appleton, owner CoreCivic said it had sold the prison. The Department of Homeland Security paid CoreCivic $495.6 million for the 1,640-bed prison. It will continue to contract for the management of the prison and has said it expects to generate $75 million annually through its five-year contract.
