James Elvin Nordaune, age 67, of Benson, passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2014, at the VA Hospital in St. Cloud. He was surrounded by his family and second family, the staff of building 51. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, March 28, 2014, at 2:00 p.m., at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson, with Rev. Gary Brandenburg officiating. Interment will be at the St. Francis Catholic Cemetery in Benson. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. noon to 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 28, 2014, at the church. James Elvin Nordaune was born March 28, 1946 in Starbuck, Minnesota, the son of Elvin and Bernice Nordaune. He was baptized at Minnewaska Lutheran Church in Starbuck and confirmed at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson. He grew up south of Benson and attended school at District 28 through the 6th grade and graduated from Benson High School in 1964.
After high school, Jim joined the US Navy. After completing boot camp in California, Jim was accepted to be a Seabee, which he was very proud of. He served two tours in Vietnam. Jim was honorably discharged in 1969.
On August 10, 1974, James married Sandra Kepner at St. Francis Catholic church. Jim worked at the alfalfa plant, McCarthy Lumber, and Madden Bins. In 1981, Jim was declared 100% disabled due to the effects of Agent Orange.
In May of 2005, Jim became a resident of the VA long term care facility in St. Cloud due to his declining health. While at the VA, Jim brought life to building 51 by always being up for any activity. Jim was a people person and enjoyed visiting, crafts, gardening, and games. He always made sure people knew he was 100% Norwegian, which he was very proud of.
Jim passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2014, at the VA Hospital in St. Cloud. He was surrounded by his family and second family, the staff of building 51. He attained 67 years, 11 months and 25 days of age.
Jim is survived by his wife, Sandra of Benson; son, Adam of St. Louis Park; daughter and fiancé, Trisha Nordaune and Steve Ness of Starbuck; daughter-in-law, Beth of Rochester; two granddaughters, Ava and Laurel; mother, Bernice; two brothers, Dale (Kathy) and Gary (Wendy); two nieces, Teresa and Abby; and nephew, Derek. He was preceded in death by his son, Jason, and father, Elvin.
