Dale Roland Dahl
Dale Roland Dahl, 87, of Benson, Minnesota, died Wednesday, December 2, 2020, at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood.
A private family funeral mass will be held at the St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson. Interment will be at the St. Francis Catholic Church Cemetery in Benson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Starbuck Ambulance are preferred.
Dale was born November 30, 1933, at home in Ayrshire, Iowa, the son of Raymond and Evelyn (Fletcher) Dahl. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Faith.
Dale proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956. He was aboard the USS Iowa.
Dale was united in marriage to Rosemary Soat, June 15, 1957, in Estherville, Iowa. They were blessed with one son, Michael, and twin daughters, Laura and Lisa. They moved to Appleton in 1966, where they owned and operated Dahl’s Super Valu grocery store. In 1979, they moved to Benson, where the family owned and operated Dahl’s Super Valu until they sold and moved to Ashby, where they owned and operated Dahl’s Hartz Foods. Dale and Rosemary eventually moved back to Benson to be closer to their grandchildren. Dale moved to the Minnewaska Lutheran Home (MLH) in Starbuck in January 2018.
Dale was a member of the VFW. It was a proud day on his birthday in 2018 when he received his quilt of valor from the Ashby VFW. Dale loved to fish. He spent many hours catching and releasing. He didn’t care to eat fish, so he would often share with others in return for a good homemade pie, bread, jams, or cookies. Dale loved to play cards, cribbage, and shake dice with the guys. He was very proud of his grandsons and three great granddaughters. He enjoyed their visits, phone calls, and receiving colored pictures in the mail. He also enjoyed all the activities at MLH, especially bingo, his garden planter, arts and crafts and the live music.
Dale was called from life Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood.
Dale is survived by his daughter Laura (Mark) Ascheman of Danvers; grandsons: Brandon (Laura) Ascheman of Danvers, and Nathan (Emily) Ascheman of Hugo; great granddaughters: Oliva, Piper and Elliott Ascheman of Danvers; sisters: Elaine (Tom) Anderson of Laurens, Iowa and Vivian (Pete) Peterson of Estherville, Iowa; brother-in-law Donald Soat of Jackson, MI and sisters-in-law Diana Soat of San Antonio, Texas and Bonnie Dahl of Spirit Lake, Iowa.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Evelyn Dahl; parents-in-law Lawrence and Gertrude Soat; his wife Rosemary, son Michael, and daughter Lisa; brothers: Donald, Kenneth, Marvin “Bud”, Eldon “Dwane” and Richard “Red” Dahl; in-laws Bud and Shirley Soat and Jim Soat.
