Emil Elmer Hamann, 87, of Alexandria, Minnesota, passed away Tuesday morning, June 2, 2026, at the Nelson Gables Assisted Living in Alexandria. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 9, at the St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Benson, Minnesota, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. 

Emil was born at home November 12, 1938, in Albany, Minnesota to Emil and Eleanor (Mauritz) Hamann. He graduated from Albany High School in 1956. He attended St. Cloud State University and graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He also attended the University of North Dakota and received his Master’s degree of Science in Teaching in 1965.

Emil’s first teaching job was in Clarissa, Minnesota where he taught for one year. He then moved to Zeeland, ND where he taught for two years.

June 6, 1964, he married Mary Lou Jane (Jund) in Albany. They moved to Benson  in August 1965 where he taught chemistry, physics, and basic electronics for 40 years. He also coached JV wrestling. During the 1970s and 1980s, if you attended a Benson Braves football game and heard the gunshot marking halftime and the end of the game, it was Emil. After retiring, he and Mary Lou moved to Ethel Lake, where he spent his time fishing on area lakes.

While living in Benson, Emil served on the Benson Auxiliary Police for 14 years. He served a term as president of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Benson and was also an elder. After moving to Ethel Lake, he served as an elder at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ottertail, Minnesota. He enjoyed spending time cutting wood and fishing with his grandsons.

He is survived by his wife Mary Lou; children: Catherine (Bruce Lee) Finley of Grand Forks, ND, Michele (Richard) Schuerman of Alexandria, MN, Daniel (Mary) Hamann of Forrest Lake, MN, and Andrea Barth of Alexandria, MN; two grandchildren, Drizzt Barth of Minneapolis, and Artemis Barth of Savage; sister-in-law Joy Hamann of Cold Spring, MN; nephews, Mark (Paige) Hamann of Charleston, SC, David (Kim) Hamann of Avon, MN, and Michael (Anna) Hamann of Bemidji, MN; and brother-in-law Raymond Jund of Mandan, ND.

Emil was preceded in death by his parents Emil and Eleanore; brother Arnold Hamann; brothers-in-law Robert and Thomas Jund; and sisters-in-law Donna Senftner, Elsie Seiler, Celia Wald, and Frances Schmitt.
