Braves stay alive
Blake Brehmer shoots a floater for Benson against Ortonville in Benson March 4.
The Benson boys basketball team finished the season with a 10-16 record and earned the seven seed in the Section 6A - South playoffs. The Braves played host to a pigtail game against 10th seeded Ortonville in Benson March 4 and came away with a big 78-59 blowout win over the Trojans. Harold Habben was able to break the 60-year single season rebounding record set by Dick Hawkins in 1964. These two teams met one other time this season in Benson back in December. Benson handled that game easily with a 72-49 win over the Trojans. It is also a rematch of a pigtail game a season ago when the Trojans played spoiler and ended Benson’s season last year.
It was a little closer of a game in the opening minutes than Benson would have liked, but thanks to a significant run to end the first half, Benson held a 47-31 lead at the break.
The Braves took their foot off the gas a bit in the second half, but were never in any danger of losing the lead. Benson outscored Ortonville 31-28 in the final 18 minutes to secure the 19-point victory and advance in the Section 6A - South playoffs.
