Langan Farms chosen 2024 Swift County Farm Family of the Year
Mike Langan, along with Jack, Mary, and Pat Langan, were honored as the Minnesota Extension Service’s Swift County Farm Family of the year during a ceremony Sunday at the Swift County Fair.
Evolving and growing through five generations of Langan family stewardship. Patrick and Bridget Langan homesteaded the land after they immigrated from Ireland to Minnesota in 1878.
Today, fourth-generation brothers Patrick and Michael Langan along with Patrick’s wife, Mary, and their son, Jack, operate the farm. Their farm and family were recognized at the Swift County Fair Sunday.
With the variety of crops, all are involved with different focus areas across the operation. In addition to the family members, the farm operation has a hard-working dedicated team of both full-time and seasonal employees to support the farm operation.
Langan Farms is a family farm operation with a focus on diversified grain production growing corn, soybeans, edible black beans, wheat, sugar beets and sweet corn.
Patrick and Mary have three children; Laura and Elizabeth have off-farm careers in healthcare consulting and environmental science, and Jack recently graduated from Benson High School. He is active in all areas of the farm operation and is planning to pursue a farming career.
He plans to attend South Dakota State University this fall with a major in agriculture science. The family is looking forward to his expanded role in the operation through and after college.
In addition to the farm operation, the family members are active in community activities and serve several organizations.
Mike Langan has been on the West-Con (Western Consolidated Cooperative) board of directors for 11 years and currently serves as board chair.
Mary Langan has been a member of the Benson District 777 school board since 2017 and serves as board clerk. She is leaving the board at the end of the year.
