Here are four big issues facing lawmakers
Editor’s note: Swift, Stevens and most of Pope County are represented by District 12A Rep. Paul Anderson, R-Starbuck, in the Minnesota House. District 12 state Sen. Torrey Westrom represents the area in the Minnesota Senate.
Minnesota’s House has a 37 to 37 tie between members of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party and the Republican Party. In the Senate, the DFL has a narrow majority of 34 members to the Republicans’ 33.
Both Anderson and Westrom are up for election this coming November should they decide seek reelection. As of Tuesday, they are back at the state Capitol for the Legislature’s short session, which occurs in the second year of a biennium. In the first year of the biennium, the Legislature convenes in early January.
