David Joseph Griffin, 67, Cold Spring

David Joseph Griffin, 67, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep Saturday, January 4, 2014 at his home in Cold Spring, Minnesota.  
David was born to Richard and Florence Griffin at San Diego Naval Hospital  Valentine’s Day 1946. He was the eldest of 11 children.
Dave graduated from Benson High School. He studied biology at St. John’s University where he was an All-American football player, having played on the 1965 national championship team. From 1970 to 1976, he worked at the St. Cloud Children’s Home as a counselor, after which he became a self-taught cabinetmaker, gardener, winemaker, and fruit tree farmer.  With endless curiosity, he explored the world of Minnesota peach and apricot propagation, and worked passionately toward developing cold hardy fruit varieties.

Doris Molden, 86, of Benson

Doris Molden, 86, of Benson, died  Monday, January 13, 2014  at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck.
The funeral service for Doris Molden was held  Saturday, January 18, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson with Pastor Paul Idstrom officiating.  Marg Friedlein was the organist and accompanied the congregation in singing “On Eagles Wings” and “The Old Rugged Cross”.  Dick Dandurdend sang “Go Rest High on That Mountain”.
Honorary Bearers were all of Doris’ relatives and friends.  Casketbearers were Terry Rohloff, Zach Rohloff, Todd Rohloff, Travis Collins, Troy Collins, Mike Molden, and Zach Molden.
Interment was in the Benson City Cemetery.

John Edward Rear, age 68, of Benson

John Edward Rear, 68, of Benson, died Saturday, January 11, 2014 at the Swift County Benson Hospital in Benson, Minnesota.
Funeral services were held  Wednesday, January 15, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson, with Rev. Paul Idstrom officiating.  Burial followed the service at the Benson City Cemetery.  Visitation was held  Tuesday, January 14,  from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson, and for one hour prior to the service at the church  Wednesday.  Zniewski Funeral Home of Benson was in charge of the arrangements.  www.zniewskifuneralhome.com
John Edward Rear was born April 6, 1945, in Montevideo, Minnesota, the son of Edward and Agnes (Jorgenson) Rear.  He was baptized and confirmed at the Mandt Lutheran Church in rural Montevideo.  He grew up in Swenoda Township and graduated from Benson High School in 1963.

Margaret K. Smith, age 86, died on Sunday, January 5, 2014, at Windmill Ponds assisted living in Alexandria.  Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Murdock.  

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 10, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson.

Father William J. Coy, 85, Maryknoll, New York, formerly Danvers

Father William J. Coy died December 18, 2013 in New Rochelle, New York, of complications from open heart surgery. He was 85 years of age, and a Maryknoll priest for 58 years.  William Joseph Coy was born in Danvers, Minnesota, October 31, 1928 to Morris and Agnes (Quigley) Coy. He graduated from Benson High School, and attended St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota his freshman year. Realizing his calling to the priesthood, he then applied for and was accepted at the Maryknoll Catholic Mission Society of America’s seminary. He was ordained in 1955 and assigned to Bolivia. His first assignment after language school was to the Diocese of Santa Cruz. He was then assigned to San Pedro parish in the capital city of La Paz and from there to the jungle Vicariate of the Pando, where he worked almost exclusively for the rest of his time in Latin America.

Ellsworth J. Stensrud, age 82, of Swift Falls, died Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the Northeast Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, TX.
 
Services are 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 03, 2014, at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Swift Falls, with Rev. Seth Novak officiating.
 
Visitation will be from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, January 02, 2014 at the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson.  Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.
 
Arrangements are with the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson, MN.

Rodney Fossen, 67, of Benson, died on Monday, December 30, 2013, at his home in Benson. 

Services are Friday, January 3 at 2 p.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Benson with Rev. Dennis McManus officiating.

Visitation is Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at St. Mark's.  Visitation will also be one hour prior to the funeral service on Friday.

Arrangements are with the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson.

Debra L. Webber, 50, Hancock

Debra Lorraine Webber, Age 50, of Hancock, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday, December 29th, 2013 at Swift County Benson Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer.  She was the beloved wife of Brian Webber.
Debra was born in Canby, MN, on April 13, 1963.  She grew up in Clarkfield, MN, till the age of 13 and then spent the rest of her childhood in Dawson, MN.  She was the daughter of Lonny and Lorraine Schwartz.  Besides her husband, Brian, Debra leaves behind her daughters Michelle (Troy) Nelson of Clontarf, MN, Miranda (Steven) Henriksen of Benson, MN, and Melanie Webber of Fargo, ND.  She also leaves behind a sister Dawn (Ryan) Madden of Benson, a brother Duane Schwartz of Dawson, and her cherished grandson Tanner Nelson, as well as numerous cousins and close friends.

Peter Raymond Ollendick, 65, Benson

Peter Raymond Ollendick was born on May 2, 1948, in Benson, Minnesota, the son of Raymond and Esther Schwebach Ollendick.  He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Faith and grew up in Tara Township, Swift County.  He attended country school and then graduated from Benson High School.  Peter served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.  On October 24, 1970 Peter was united in marriage to Connie Miller at St. Malachy’s Catholic Church in Clontarf.  This union was blessed with five children.  They lived in Benson and in Fort Dodge Iowa from 1988 to 1994, before returning to Benson.
