Michael Alan Avok, 45, of Norfolk, NE

Michael Alan Avok, 45, of Norfolk, died Thursday, July 30, 2015, at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

An informal graveside service for family and friends was held at Crown Hill Cemetery near Madison, Nebraska on August 4.

Michael was born Aug. 18, 1969, in Benson, Minn. His family later moved to Yankton, S.D., and he graduated from Yankton High School in 1987. It was at Yankton High School that Michael first discovered his talent for and love of journalism, and his devotion to that profession would guide much of the remainder of his life.

After graduating from Yankton High School, Michael attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D., where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in journalism in 1993.

Michael’s dedication to reporting and writing was, in large part, due to his love of people. And that especially meant his family.

Dorothy L. Stelzig, 100, of Danvers

Dorothy L. Stelzig, 100, of Danvers, died Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at the Knute-Nelson Care Center in Alexandria.  
Funeral services were 1 p.m. Saturday, August 1 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson with a visitation held from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.  Burial was in the Church of the Visitation Catholic Cemetery in Danvers.  
Dorothy Loretta Stelzig was born July 14, 1915, in Swift County, Minnesota to Ferdinand and Martha (Reich) Platow.  She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith.  She grew up in the Danvers and Holloway area and attended country school through the eighth grade.

Patricia “Patty” Grussing, age 53, of Sebeka, formerly of Benson, died on Sunday, August 2, 2015, at the Tri-County Hospital in Wadena.  Graveside Services will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, August 5, 2015, at the Benson City Cemetery.  Arrangements are with the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson, MN.   www.zniewskifuneralhome.com 
Patricia “Patty” R. Grussing was born January 12, 1962 to John and Alma (Hess) Grussing in Benson, Minnesota.  She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith   and grew up in the Benson area.  Patty adored her dogs and her love for nature and animals brought her a lot of joy.

Ingolf N. Urke, 89, of Benson

Ingolf Noel Urke, 89, of Benson, died  Friday, July 24, 2015 at the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 1, at the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson.  Interment followed  the service at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in Benson. Visitation was held from 10-11 a.m.  Saturday at the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson.
He was born December 3, 1925 to Knut and Clara Lien Urke in Langhei Township, Pope County, Minnesota.  He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.   He worked as a farmhand for various farmers, was a truck driver, and a mechanic at the Ford Garage in Starbuck.  After retiring, he moved to Benson.

Ronald “Ron” Corneliusen, 87, of Mesa, AZ (formerly of Benson)

Ronald “Ron” Corneliusen, 87, of Mesa, AZ (formerly of Benson, Minnesota) passed away June 23, 2015.  Ron’s early years were spent in Benson until he joined the Army in 1946.  He spent his service years in El Paso, TX, Korea, Japan and Germany.  After retiring from the service, he began a career with Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms as an inspector.  To his children he could do anything; build storm windows, sew couch slipcovers and bake the best bread.  He is survived by: Colleen (Carl) Lorson, John (Caren) Corneliusen and Ann (Jim) Balquist and six grandchildren: Nick, Elizabeth, Kylie, Hunter, Brian and Brett; sister Donna (Harold) Krenz of Minnesota, sister-in-law, Viola Corneliusen of Benson.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mesa Public Libraries or KAET Arizona Public Television.

Arden Loen, age 79, died Monday, July 13, 2015.  Funeral Services will be 10:30 AM, Friday, July 17, 2015, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Swift Falls with Rev. John Smith officiating.  Burial will be in the Swift Falls Cemetery.  Visitation will be held 5:30 - 7:30 PM Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.  Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service on Friday. Donna Mae (Fennell) Gode, age 72, died Sunday, July 12, 2015, at the St. Cloud Hospital.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM, Friday, July 17, 2015, at St. Malachy Catholic Church in Clontarf.  Interment will be in the St. Malachy Catholic Church Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5 – 8 PM, Thursday, July 16, 2015, at St. Malachy Catholic Church with a Rosary at 5:30 PM and a Parish Prayer Service at 7:30 PM.  Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.  Arrangements are with Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson.  www.zniewskifuneralhome.com

James David Van Beveren Sumption, 89, Alexandria

James David Van Beveren Sumption was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 13, 1925 to Richard and Mary (Horrell) Van Beveren. His family moved to Minnesota and lived in the Minneota area where Jim attended school. Before finishing high school, he answered the call of duty and joined the US Navy. He served from January 7, 1944 to February 19, 1946 when he was honorably discharged. Jim spent much of his deployment on a submarine in the South Pacific, and later was awarded the Purple Heart for his service. He then returned to Minneota and completed high school, graduating with Beverly Swanson, his high school sweetheart. On August 14, 1946, he and Beverly were married at Hope Lutheran Church in Minneota. The couple moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Jim attended Augustana College, where he was all conference in basketball and ran track. After graduation, he and Bev moved to St. Paul and Jim attended Luther Seminary.

Hunter A. Boutain age 14 of Alexandria died on Thursday, July 9, 2015 at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis.  A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 AM on Monday, July 13, 2015 at the Holiday Inn in Alexandria.  Visitation was held 4-8 PM on Sunday, July 12, 2015 at the Anderson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the Holiday Inn on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Hunter Boutain Memorial Fund c/o Glenwood State Bank; 2221 S Broadway; Alexandria, MN 56308

Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.

Boyd Jaeger, age 90, of Benson

Boyd Ernest Jaeger, 90, of Benson, Minnesota died Saturday, July 4, 2015, at the Swift County Benson Hospital.  
Funeral services were 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 8, 2015, at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson.  Visitation was held Tuesday, July 7, 2015, from 5-8 p.m. at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church and for one hour prior to the service.  
Interment was in the Benson City Cemetery.
Boyd Ernest Jaeger was born January 30, 1925 to Ernest and Josephine (Hippe) Jaeger in Benson.  He was baptized at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.  He grew up in Cashel Township and attended rural country school and Benson Public School.  
January 29, 1950, Boyd was united in marriage to Lucille A. Fuhrman at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Benson by Rev. H.S. Nasheim.  This union was blessed with three children, six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.  Together they were able to share in more than 58 years of marriage.
