Obituary

Alvera Haugen, 95, of Benson, passed away on June 20, 2016 at the Swift County Benson Hospital in Benson, MN. Visitation will be held 10:00 – 11:00 A.M. followed by the Funeral Service at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson.  Interment will be in the Benson City Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson.

Alvera was born on March 27, 1921 to Elmer and Tillie (Thostenson) Flaten in Camp Lake Township near Swift Falls, MN. She was baptized at Our Savior’s Lutheran church in Benson on April 10, 1921 by Reverend O.J. Kvale. She was confirmed at St. Pauli Lutheran Church near Swift Falls. Alvera grew up in the Camp Lake and Murdock area.

Sonja “Toni” Karen Jossart, 80, Bismarck, North Dakota, died  June 14, 2016, from the progression and complications of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 20, at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with Rev. Jon Splichal Larson officiating. Visitation was held from 5-9 p.m.  Sunday, June 19, at Eastgate Funeral Service,  Bismarck.
Burial was held at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Toni was born  May 25, 1936, in Benson, Minnesota.  She is the daughter of Ben and Ethel (Troy) Johnson.  She attended grade school through high school in Benson.  She loved music and participated in band, chorus, Triple Trio, Girls Quartet, and Girls Sextet.  She also participated in the Sr. Play, Jr. Play, Homecoming Committee and Royalty, Annual Staff, and Student Council.  After graduating high school in 1954, she attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD and studied business.

Gwendolyn Jorran “Gwen” Grothe, 83, of Fergus Falls, Minnesota died Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at PioneerCare in Fergus Falls.

Funeral services were 10:30  a.m. Monday, June 13, 2016 at the Olson Funeral Home Chapel in Fergus Falls. Visitation was from 2-4 p.m.  Sunday, June 12, at the Olson Funeral Home. Rev. Kate Bruns officiated at the service. Burial was in the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery in Fergus Falls.

Gwendolyn was born  April 30, 1933, in Pope County to Martin and Gida (Nelson) Mikkelson. She lived and worked on the family farm as a child and attended District 14 Country School, and then she went to Glenwood High School and finished with a home course, graduating in 1951.

Donald A. Hammer, 84, died peacefully at his home  May 12, 2016 in Bemidji, Minnesota.

A funeral celebration was held Friday, June 17, at 1 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Bemidji, with a reception that followed. Visitation was from 12-1 p.m. prior to the celebration.   

Don is survived by his wife and caregiver of 62 years, Faye, three daughters: Colette (Bob) Erickson of Hayden Lake, ID, Larae (Roger) Peterson of Reardon, WA, Darcee Kissler of Winter Park, CO, and seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Donald was born  April 19, 1932 in Granite Falls.  He graduated from Benson High School in 1950. Don met Lovetta (Faye) at Concordia College where he later earned a teaching degree. They married in July of 1954. That fall, Don was drafted for the Korean War. His tour of military duty started at Guided Missile school in Huntsville, AL, and concluded at the White Sands Proving Ground in Las Cruces, NM.

Dann Michael Moesenthin

Dann Michael Moesenthin, age 60 of Virginia died Friday, June 3, 2016 at Essentia Health – Virginia. He was born April 22, 1956 in Virginia the son of William Frederick and Margaret Gail (Granros) Moesenthin. Dann grew up in Virginia, and lived in Chicago, Toledo, and Phoenix prior to returning to Virginia. He was employed as a millwright in bulk materials handling.

Dann is survived by siblings: James (LuAnne) Moesenthin of Virginia, Richard F. Moesenthin of Benson, MN, William C. Moesenthin of Toledo, OH, Barbara Carlson of Eveleth, Jerry Moesenthin  of Gilbert, Joan Braun of Minneapolis, Jane Moesenthin of Buhl and Jack Moesenthin of Virginia; numerous nieces nephews, extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law: Sandra Lee (LoPresti) Moesenthin and niece Stephanie Moesenthin.

Ardell Rodrick Olson

Ardell Rodrick Olson, 84, of Murdock, passed away at home on June 5, 2016, with his family present. Funeral services will be Thursday, June 9, at 10:30 am at Bethesda Lutheran Church of Murdock with Pastor Dan Croonquist officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, 5pm-7pm and one hour before the service. Burial will be at Bethesda Cemetery.

 

Ardell was born April 20, 1932 on a farm north of Kerkhoven to Ole and Ada (Wall) Olson. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethesda. He grew up on a farm north of Murdock and was in 4H and Rural Youth. He attended District #5 country school and graduated from Murdock High School in 1950. He went to the U of Morris for ag school, then enlisted in the Army, serving in the Korean War. He farmed north of Murdock, working some winters at Tylers in Benson.

Leo Michael Hughes, 89, died at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota  Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, 2016, from injuries sustained in a May 21 farming accident.  

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was 10 a.m., Friday, June 3, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Chatfield with Father Thomas Loomis officiating.  Visitation was from 4:00 - 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church  Thursday, June 2, and concluded  with a Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m.   Visitation continued one hour prior to the Mass at the church  Friday.   The Rite of Committal followed the Mass  Saturday at Calvary Cemetery, also in Chatfield.  Military honors were accorded by the Chatfield VFW Post 6913.

LaVina Lou Sellman, 75, of Kirksville, Missouri, formerly of Benson, Minnesota, passed away Monday, May 30, 2016, at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 9 from 6-8 p.m. at the Benson Liquor Store.

LaVina was born  March 14, 1941, in Benson, Minnesota, the daughter of Leo and Dorothy Wilson Atchison. LaVina lived most of her life in Benson. She operated LaVina’s Café for a number of years and worked 35 years at the Benson Municipal Liquor Store. She moved to Kirksville, Missouri five years ago to be near her daughters.

She was a member of the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Benson and The Crossing in Kirksville, Missouri. She was also a member of the Moose Lodge in Kirksville. She enjoyed gardening, reading and working on word puzzles.
