LaVerne Howard Neuhaus, Benson

LaVerne Howard Neuhaus was born in Pontiac, Michigan to Laura C. (Larson) and Emil J. Neuhaus on November 23, 1929.  He grew up south of Benson on the family farm and graduated from Benson High School.  LaVerne served during the Vietnam War, completed 28 years of active duty, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force.  Upon retirement, he moved back to Benson and was a member of the VFW Post 1403.  He was called from this life on Thursday, April 4, 2013, at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN.  He attained the age of 83 years, 4 months and 11 days.  His funeral is Friday, April 12, 2 p.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Benson.

Gloria Constance Wigfield, San Diego, formerly Benson

Gloria Constance Wigfield was born June 21, 1926 to Sam & Alma Kjenstad. Gloria passed away Monday,  April 1, 2013.  She was raised in Norwegian tradition in South Minneapolis, along with five beloved siblings.

Gloria married George (Duke) in 1947 and moved to Benson in 1952.  Together, they ran Wigfield's Department  Store for over 30 years before retiring to San Diego in 1986.
Gloria is survived by her five children: David (Louise), John, Anna Brudvig (Jim), Adam (Linda), Mary Langan (Patrick); 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and her sisters-in-law, Norma Jean Wigfield and Milka Wigfield.

Mary Lou Beyer, Benson

The funeral service for Mary Lou Beyer was held  Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson.  Pastor Fred Morck officiated at the service.  Marge Friedlein was the organist.   Dan and Kristin Smith sang “In the Garden” and “On Eagles Wings”.  Congregational hymns were “My Faith Looks Up to Thee”, “Eternal Father, Strong to Save”, and “Here I Am, Lord”.
Casketbearers were Wayne Norby, Larry Pray, Gary Johnson, Eugene Johnson, Roger Johnson, Art Norby, and Al Norby.  The Honorary Bearer was Ronald Pray.  The interment service was at the Appleton City Cemetery with Pastor Michelle Rowell officiating.

Mary Lou Beyer was born December 11, 1929, in Kragero Township, Chippewa County, to Arthur E. and Inga M. (Canton) Norby.  She was baptized as an infant at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Watson.  She was confirmed April 23, 1944, at Kviteseid Lutheran Church in Milan.  Mary Lou graduated from Milan High School June 5, 1947.

Joanne G. Grothe, 80, of Benson

Funeral services for Joanne G. Grothe, 80, of Benson, were held Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson.

Interment followed the service at the Benson City Cemetery.  Joanne Gertrude Grothe, was born February 21, 1933, in Benson, the daughter of Oscar and Martha Foslien Vinge. She grew up in Langhei Township, Pope County, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at West Zion Lutheran Church. She attended country school, grades 1-8, at District #51 in Langhei Township. She graduated from Benson High School and then enrolled at the Medical School of Technology in Minneapolis for one year.

Elsie H. Klein (Burns-Christopherson), Minneapolis

Elsie H. Klein (Burns-Christopherson), 92, passed away February 22, 2013 at the Ebenezer Care Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

A memorial service is planned for April 27, 2013 at 11:15 a.m. at the Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church Chapel with Pastor Brandenburg officiating. A visitation prior to the service will be at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Six Mile Grove Cemetery.

Elsie was born on the family farm near rural Danvers in Swenoda Township July 12, 1920. She was the youngest of a family of 10 children. There was no school bus transportation in District #34, so every day she would walk the two miles each way. This continued until the graduation from the eighth grade.

Elsie was confirmed and baptized at the Immanuel Church (Six Mile Grove). In the later years, her membership was at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson.

Sandra Lee Showalter of Danvers

Sandra Lee Showalter of Danvers, was called from this life on Thursday, March 28, 2013, at her home in Danvers, surrounded by love.  
Friends called on the family Saturday, April 6, from 2-5 p.m.  at the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson.  

A memorial service will be held later this summer in Hazen, North Dakota.
Sandra Lee Showalter, 62, was born  June 19, 1950, the daughter of David and Ruby Jensen of Hazen, North Dakota.  As a child, she attended Spring Brook Elementary in Oliver County and graduated from high school in Hazen.  She attended College in Minot.

Rev. John H. “Jack” Brooks, 88, of Sioux Falls

Rev. John H. “Jack” Brooks, 88, of Sioux Falls, died Sunday, March 24, 2013 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

John Herman Brooks was born in Chicago, IL on June 5, 1924. His parents were Edward L. Brooks and Minnie C. (Zarbach) Brooks. Jack was raised in the rural resort community of Beulah, Michigan, graduating from the Benzonia High School in 1943. For 6 years, he worked at the local drug store, and served as a licensed minister at his boyhood Eden Congregational Church.

In the fall of 1949, he enrolled in the Yankton College School of Theology in Yankton, SD. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1953, and his Bachelor of Theology degree in 1954. He was ordained into the Christian Ministry on December 12, 1954. He served the Letcher and Loomis Congregational Churches from 1952 to 1958. On June 24, 1956, he was united in marriage with Ramona Brost.

Leslie G. Fenton Bolt, 58, of Kerkhoven

Leslie G. Fenton Bolt, 58, of Kerkhoven, died Sunday afternoon, March 10, at the Rice Care Center in Willmar.

A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m.  Thursday, March 14, at the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Willmar.

Leslie G. Fenton Bolt was born  June 1, 1954, in Litchfield, Minnesota, the daughter of Hugh and Virginia (Stevens) Fenton. She grew up in Litchfield and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She graduated from Litchfield High School in 1972 and then attended the Willmar Community College.

In 1973, Leslie was united in marriage to Wayne Evenson and they lived in Litchfield, Park Rapids and Arizona. In 1993, Leslie was married to Jerry Bolt and they lived in North Carolina. In 2000, Leslie returned to live in Kerkhoven. She was employed at Darold’s Super Value Foods in Benson.

Steve Nokleby, 61, Montevideo

Steve Nokleby died Friday, March 8, 2013 at his home in rural Montevideo at the age of 61.  

Memorial services were conducted  Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev. Marie Eckberg officiating.

Organist was Nancy Strand and vocalist was Dorian Chalmers who sang  “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”. Congregational hymns were  “O Jesus, I Have Promised” and “For The Beauty Of The Earth”.
Honorary bearers were all his nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Interment was in the Jevnaker Lutheran Cemetery.  

Steven Craig Nokleby was born  April 4, 1951 in Montevideo, Minnesota to Arnold and Eileen (Anderson) Nokleby.  He was baptized and confirmed at Jevnaker Lutheran Church.  He attended rural school, Milan Public Schools and graduated from Montevideo High School in 1969.  He attended Concordia College in Moorhead and Southwest State in Marshall.

Roselle Evelyn Johnson, age 78, of Benson

Roselle Evelyn Johnson, age 78, of Benson, died Sunday, March 17, 2013, at the Golden Living Center – Meadow Lane in Benson, MN.           Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson, with Rev. Gary Brandenburg officiating.  Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M., Friday, March 22, 2013 at the Trinity Lutheran Church and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.  Arrangements are with the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson, MN.
    
Roselle “Grandma Zell”, the daughter of Ross David Mills and Ellen Victoria (Anderson) Mills, was born August 23, 1934 in Six Mile Grove Township.  She was 78 years old and one of four children. Roselle was baptized into the Christian Faith by Reverend Schell and confirmed in 1949 by Reverend J.G. Swedeburg, both at Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson, MN.  Roselle graduated from Benson High School in 1952.
