Storm damage abatement requests coming in slowly

Swift County’s Board of Commissioners approved property tax abatements totaling $8,579 last Tuesday for those who had buildings damaged in powerful spring storms.
Just 29 requests for abatements were made despite it being estimated that there were far more properties in the county that suffered damage, especially in the May 12 storm.
At a meeting with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz in Benson May 18, Swift County Emergency Manager Bill McGeary was asked how many structures in Swift County he thought had been damaged in the storm. “There were hundreds of structures damaged, over hundreds,” he replied.
