Sauk Centre-Melrose wins final match to edge Benson wrestlers, 40-33

The Benson wrestling team lost a close dual with Sauk Centre-Melrose, Thursday, 40-33. Benson trailed 34-33 going into the final match, but SC-Melrose earned a pin to silence the Benson crowd and leave the Benson gym with the narrow win.
The Braves had opened up the season at the West Central Area Invitational, Dec. 7, and this was the second competition of the season for the Benson wrestlers.
“It was a fun dual and we were able to get a lot of kids quality matches, which helps us develop our younger wrestlers, but I’m disappointed that it didn’t work out as a win,” coach Scott Thompson said. “We have been bitten by the flu bug this week and that certainly didn’t help us last night as we had three starters out and another 3-4 that were wrestling through the flu bug.
“I’m very proud of my team for wrestling through sickness and also handling a loss to a lesser team well.”
Benson was set to host a quadrangular with BOLD, EVW, and Ortonville, Tuesday (yesterday) before competing at Osakis, Thursday (tomorrow) and at the Monticello Invitational, Saturday...
