Girls tennis team opens up season with home triangular

The Benson-KMS girls tennis team opened up the 2018 season with a home triangular Monday, Aug. 20 against Parkers Prairie and Wadena-Deer Creek.  Results of the matches were not available by presstime.
Benson is also set to compete in three other competitions the first week, including a triangular at NLS, Tuesday, Aug. 21 (with Pipestone), a home triangular with Annandale and Morris Area-CA, Thursday, Aug. 23 (tomorrow); and the LPGE triangular (with Parkers Prairie), Friday, Aug. 24.  That gives Benson a potential eight matches before the start of school.
The girls tennis team is coming off a 10-7 season from a year ago, and the team should win even more matches this season despite losing two players from last year’s team.
Benson-KMS, coached by Don Brehmer and Mary Weckwerth, returns eight of the 10 starters from last year’s team, which also went 5-3 during the WCC schedule.
“We have five returning seniors who each played over 20 matches last year, and we also have a strong group of younger players coming up to fill the gap left by the two players we lost to graduation,” coach Brehmer said.  “We expect a strong start to our season and to compete for the section and conference titles this season....”
