Five Benson High School students attend first-ever National Trap Shooting contest in Michigan

Benson had five students who qualified for and attended the first-ever national trap shooting event held in Mason, MI, recently. The clay target league has spread across the United States and is now made up of kids from twenty other states in addition to Minnesota, with about 25,000 kids participating nationwide.
The national shoot was made up of kids who scored high enough averages in the regular season to qualify them to shoot in the national tourney. “For these kids to even make the national level qualifying level is a great accomplishment,” coach Andy Abner said.
Attending the national trap shoot was the Benson team of AJ Klassen, Devon Lilies, Hunter Mondor, Brady Ascheman, and Jared Kurkosky. Three of the five  (Klassen, Liles, and Mondor) shot in the individual competition.
The National Shoot began Thursday, July 12 and ran for four days. The entire team shot Friday and did well enough to qualify themselves to the championship round, Sunday. Only the top 80 teams were asked to come back to shoot on Sunday. For the two-day competition, the boys shot a total of  931 targets out of a possible 1,000.
This put the boys in 20th place out of the 175 teams that attended Nationals....
