Leona Winkelman, 91, of Appleton, died on Friday morning, December 15, at the Appleton Nursing Home. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Wednesday December 20, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Appleton and continue from 1:00 to 2:00 pm, on Thursday, December 21 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson. A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, December 21, at 2:00 pm at St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson. Interment will follow the service at the St. Francis Catholic Church Cemetery. Leona M. Winkelman, 91, the daughter of Charlie and Annie (Behrens) Barth, was born on January 9, 1926, on the family farm near Holloway, Minnesota. She was baptized and Confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Holloway. She grew up in Holloway and attended District #75 country school and graduated from Holloway High School.
On April 25, 1946, Leona was united in marriage to Gerald W. Winkelman in the St. John’s Catholic Church parsonage by Father Phil Scymarski. Together they were able to share in over 52 years of marriage. This union was blessed with one daughter Bonita. They lived in Holloway where she worked at the potato factory. She taught catechism at the Catholic Church. In 1958 they moved to Benson, were she worked at the grocery stores and together they worked at the laundromat. She loved birds and enjoyed walking, singing, dancing, playing the organ and piano, and caligraphy. Being with her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren was always one of Leona’s greatest joys. Leona was called from this life on Friday morning, December 15, 2017 at the Appleton Nursing Home. She attained the age of 91 years, 10 months, and 28 days.
She is survived by her daughter Bonnie of Benson; her grandchildren Tammy (Pat) Tjosaas-Geyer of Appleton, Todd Ronald (Christie) Tjosaas of Danvers; great grandchildren, Brittany   (Zack Jaeger) Tjosaas of Willmar, Nicholas (Missy) Geyer of Appleton, Destiny, and April; great great grandchildren Raymond, Jasmine, DuWayne, Kylie, Carsen, Karlee, and; a brother Walter (Ollie) Barth; Brother in law Carl Jr. (Marie) Winkelman of Foxfield, Colorado; and many other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband Gerald in April of 1999, her parents Charlie and Annie, her brothers Paul, William, Albert, Robert, and Fred, her sisters Ruth Ann Barth, Viola Bahl, and Mary Lowry.
