MINUTES OF THE REGULAR SCHOOL BOARD MEETING
INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 777, Benson, Minnesota
Monday, May 15, 2017 - 5:30 p.m.
Benson Senior High Media Center

The meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by Chair Chad Payne.  Members present:  Andy Abner, Jodi DeJong-Hughes, Mary Langan, Jason Madden, Bill McGeary, Chad Payne and Gary Williams.
Members absent:  None.  Also present:  Dennis Laumeyer, Mike Knutson, Brad Johnson, Dave Benson, Pam Anderson, Shelly Vergin, Shannon Schmidt and Robyn Dehne.
Consent agenda items were approved as presented. 
Progress reports were presented by the administrators.
The board approved directing administration to make preparations and changes necessary to house daycare in the lower level of the junior high now that several local organizations have committed funds in addition to the school board’s commitment.
The board approved the 2017-2018 Elementary Handbook as presented.
An engineer and architect walked through the Jr. High auditorium and reported materials need to be tested for lead paint and asbestos which would require abatement and plans are being made in the event the auditorium is not available next year for music, plays, programs, athletics, etc. Preliminary recommendations from the engineer and architect should be available in early June.
The board approved the BHS renewal in the MSHSL for the 2017-2018 school year and named the superintendent and school board chair as the designated BHS school representatives for MSHSL for the 2017-2018 school year. 
The board authorized administration to select a contractor to finish the press box the trades class started.
The board approved the 5-12 Principal contract for Mike Knutson as presented.
Brad Johnson is requesting a policy for requiring parents to submit a birth certificate when enrolling in pre-K and Kindergarten. He will add wording to the policy for the consequence if qualifying documents are not provided and present it to the board in June.
Bill McGeary, Swift County Emergency Management Director, presented information about a possible FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) SAFE room. Federal funds could be accessed to construct a space if the funds become available. Dennis will review the intent to apply and bring it back to the board.
Mike Knutson explained the changes and updates in the 2017-2018 Grades 7-12 Student Handbook. This was the first reading, no action taken.
Shannon Schmidt, Athletic Director, reported many of the district scoreboards are getting outdated and presented ideas for updates and fundraising. The board asked her to set up a plan with options of replacement and bring it to the Activities Committee to review, meet with Daktronics, and then bring it back to the board.

$1,000 for Barry Jungwirth Memorial Scholarship from Mary Jungwirth
$1,400 for John Thompson Memorial Scholarship from James and Tammy Thompson
$2,500 for Albert Lokken Memorial Scholarship from Lawrence Lokken
$600 for Mary Lou Terwilliger Memorial Scholarships from Roy Terwilliger
