Harlyn Elroy Saulsbury

Lead Summary

Harlyn Elroy Saulsbury
July 17, 1949 – February 14, 2017
Harlyn Elroy Saulsbury was born July 17, 1949 in Appleton, the son of Herbert and Helen (Guse) Saulsbury.  He was baptized at Grace Lutheran in Correll and confirmed at St. Mark’s Lutheran in Benson, Minnesota.  He grew up in Benson, Minnesota with his parents and four sisters, attended school in Benson and graduated in 1967.   He then enlisted in the United States Army and served two tours of duty in Vietnam between 1967 and 1970.
On March 30, 1973, Harlyn married Sue Ann Rutledge.  This union was blessed with two children and 43 years of marriage.  After they were married they lived in Spicer.  He worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad in Willmar.  Harlyn and Sue purchased a home in Murdock and a lake lot on West Norway Lake in 1978.  He took a second job with the City of Murdock in 1985 and continued to work two full-time jobs until 1995 when he retired from the railroad.  They moved out of Murdock and built a home at their lake lot in 1996.  He continued to work for the City of Murdock until his retirement in 2014.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, crossword puzzles, flower gardening, and spending time with his grandkids.   He was a huge Minnesota Gophers fan as anyone who has seen his shed can attest to.
Harlyn was called from this life on Tuesday, February 14th, 2017 at his home.  He is survived by his wife Sue and their children Kelsy of Bloomington and Jake (Maria) of Waconia and grandchildren Taylor, Tyson, Martina, Tavion, Maddison and Jaelyn; sisters Darlene (Chuck) Wilts, Sharon (Leroy) Sanders and Lyn Saulsbury; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents Herbert and Helen and his sister Faye Schmidtke.
For his family, he was a great husband, father, grandfather and friend, and we know he meant as much to so many others as well.  He was one of a kind in every way.  Per Harl’s wishes, his body has been donated to the University of Minnesota and there will be a gathering to celebrate his life at his lake home on Saturday, February 18th from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
