Jon Tostenson, a sophomore from KMS High School, placed eighth in the boys Class A 800 meter run at the State Track and Field Championships, Saturday, with a time of 2:01.16.

Tostenson ran a time of 1:59.06 in a very fast preliminary, Friday, to go into the finals with the seventh-fastest time before placing eighth in the finals to pick up two points for the Fighting Braves team.

Tostenson, who also qualified to state last year in the 800 meter run but failed to place, was the only Benson-KMS track athlete to make it to the state meet.

Tostenson ran  in the first heat in the preliminaries and his time of 1:59.06 was third in his heat and seventh overall of the 16 runners to advance him to the nine-person finals.

The top times in the prelims were a 1:54.93 by Mitchel Acker of Pine Island, 1:56:17 by Connor Schank of HLWW, and 1:56.7 by Kurt TeBeest of Monte.

In the finals, Acker won the event with a time of 1:55.39, while Schank was second at 1:57.14, Joe Esenther, of Holy Family Catholic, was third at 1:57.27, and Jack Williams, of Pine Island, was fourth at 1:57.75.

TeBeest struggled in the finals and placed ninth with a time of 2:09.11.  A junior from Montevideo, TeBeest did win the 1,600 meter run, Friday night, with a time of 4:22.22, edging Schank by just under a second.

Tostenson’s prelim time of 1:59.06 is less than a second off the BHS school record time of 1:58.19, set by Tony Rosemeier in 1988.
