Avryl was born January 28, 1920 to Clyde and Lillie Wingarden. She loved to say that she lived most of her life in Benson where she graduated from Benson High School. She was a member of Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church and was active in the ladies’ programs of the church and taught Sunday School for many years. She was married to Justin (Jut) Johnson for 49 years until his death in 1988. They had four children; Barbara (Bryon) Webb, Jacquline Johnson, Garald Johnson (deceased) and Steve (Mary) Johnson. Jut was manager of the United Telephone Company and together they supported many organizations in Benson. Most of her life was spent as a housewife, but when it was time for her children to attend college, she worked as a dental receptionist and assistant to help pay tuition.
After Jut’s retirement they started playing golf and it became a favorite past time along with fishing on Lake Minnewaska and card games with neighbors. Avryl was an avid walker and could be seen doing her two mile daily walk through sun and snow. She was a member of the Coterie Study Club. They were able to travel extensively during those years but nothing pleased them more than sitting on their front porch across from Roosevelt Park and watching what was going on in Benson.
She moved to Glenwood to be closer to her family. She lived in Parkview Court and this year it was necessary to relocate to the adjacent portion of the Glenwood Village Care Center where she resided until her death.
Avryl is survived by one sister Beverly (Clayton) Disrud of Minneapolis, MN, her three children, eight grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Justin, her son Garald, her parents and four siblings.
