Twice delayed due the COVID-19 pandemic, the burial service for the remains of former Benson native U.S. Army-Air Corps 2ndLt. Bill McGowan are set to take place Saturday at the Normandy American Cemetery on the beaches of Normandy, France.
McGowan was a member of the 391st Fighter Squadron, 366th Fighter Group, 9th U.S. Air Force. He was killed June 6, 1944, D-Day, at age 23, when the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter bomber he was piloting was shot down. He was on his third mission that day in support of allied troops landing on Normandy’s beaches.
