John P. Flynn, 82, of Oelwein, Iowa, died peacefully Sunday evening, July 28, 2024, at MercyOne Medical Center, Oelwein, with his family by his side.
A Funeral Service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 1, 2024, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, with Robert Flynn leading the service. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Wednesday and for one hour before the service Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein, Iowa.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the Plentiful Pantry.

John Patrick Flynn was born October 26, 1941, in Benson, Minnesota, the son of Joseph William & Helen Loretta (Dolan) Flynn. John graduated from Murdock High School in Murdock, Minnesota in the class of 1959. He then attended Dunwoody Industrial Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he graduated with an associate degree in 1961. John was united in marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Mary Celeste Kelly, June 30, 1962, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Murdock. John continued his education in 1965 by enrolling at the University of Wisconsin in River Falls, Wisconsin, graduating in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree. John worked for Farm Service, Inc. for 29 years. He started in Morrison, Illinois and later worked in Harlan, Maynard and Hampton, Iowa in management, retiring in 1998. John and Mary moved to Pine, Arizona for three years and then returned to Oelwein in 2001. John continued to be active by working with Dave, Benji and Mack on the Irvine farm for many crop seasons. John was a hands-on type of guy who wasn’t afraid to learn new skills for a variety of projects around the farm or his home. John had previously been active in various community service groups in the communities where he lived and worked. For many years, John had a pilot’s license and he enjoyed piloting one of several planes that he had ownership in by taking day trips with family and friends. He loved his family and enjoyed getting together with them and the extended Irvine family for holiday gatherings. He will be greatly missed by his family and close circle of friends.
John is survived by his daughter: Colleen (Dave) Irvine of Stanley; three grandsons: Benji (Casey) Irvine of Oelwein, Mack Irvine of Oelwein & Dalton Flynn of Oelwein; two great grandchildren: Jayce Flynn of Oelwein and Eylie Irvine of Oelwein; sister: Mary Jo (Nick) Paulus of Bloomington, Minnesota; brother: Robert Flynn of Minneapolis, Minnesota; sister-in-law: Marilee Flynn of Minneapolis, and nieces & nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Mary, July 11, 2013; son: Jason; two brothers: Terrance & Charles.
