It’s two in a row for the Braves!

It took one play for the Benson Braves football team to take control of its Homecoming game with Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, Friday night. Matthew Tolifson took the opening kickoff and, after bobbling the ball and picking it up off the ground, raced 94 yards basically untouched for a 94-yard kickoff return, giving Benson a quick 7-0 lead on the way to a 33-0 Homecoming win.
It was the first Homecoming victory for Benson since 2011 when the Braves edged ACGC, 30-22. It’s also the first two-game winning streak for the Braves since early in the 2012 season.
“What a great way to celebrate Homecoming on a snowy Brock Field,” said an elated Benson head coach Adam Foslien “We couldn’t have asked for a better start to the game than by returning the opening kickoff. That set the tone for the entire night.”
Benson, now 2-5 overall and 2-4 in the Mid State Blue division, is set to close out the regular-season Wednesday (today) at Parkers Prairie (4-2, 4-3), which edged the KMS Saints, Friday, 12-0.
USA and Browerville-EV are currently in first place in the Mid State Blue division with 5-1 records, followed by Parkers Prairie (4-2), KMS and Royalton (both 3-3), LPGE and Benson (both 2-4), and BBE (0-6).
The Braves are also trying to moved up in the Section 4A standings. Benson is currently sixth of the eight teams, but could move up another spot with a win over Parkers Prairie.
The Section 4A Tourney is set to begin at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 22 and right now, it appears Benson would be headed to Upsala-Swanville Area if it loses to Parkers Prairie this week, but could be headed to USA, KMS, or Parkers Prairie again if the Braves beat PP in the regular-season finale (See Speaking of Sports column)...
