Braves softball places seventh in West Central Conference

The Benson Braves softball team finished the 2024 season with a 6-14 overall record and finished seventh in the West Central Conference. The team honored their players by presenting them with numerous team and conference awards.
The season started with Benson splitting their first four games for a 2-2 record. The Braves then lost nine of their next 10 games and finished the regular season with a 6-13 record. The team was 3-11 in the WCC to finish seventh out of eight teams. Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta won the conference with a perfect 14-0 conference record.
Benson was the fourth seed in the Section 3A - North playoffs and took on Yellow Medicine East in the first round. The Braves then fell to the Sting in the first round to end their season.
There were two players who were recognized with WCC awards. Presley Nygaard was the team’s only All-Conference player and was also named All-Area. She finished the season hitting .413 from the plate with five doubles, 15 runs, eight RBI and 11 steals. Jordan Schmidt earned Honorable Mention and finished the season hitting .351 with the team’s only homerun, led the team with 12 RBI, scored 14 runs and stole eight bases.
Shmidt, along with Lillie Ostlie, also excelled in the classroom and were named to the Academic All-State team.
The team also presented their players with team awards. Nygaard won the team Most Valuable Player award and the Silver Slugger awardfor hitting .413. Lilly Ostlie picked up the Grit Award and the Golden Glove award for her .980 fielding percentage at first base. Mya McGeary was a nightmare for opponents on the bases this year and earned the Fleet of Foot award for scoring 16 runs and stealing 17 bases. Paige Wrobleski won the Rookie of the Year award for hitting .324 from the plate with 10 runs, nine steals and three RBI.
