Four seniors back to lead Benson girls basketball team in 2021-22
The Benson football team held its season-ending football banquet recently at which time it announced the postseason awards and honors.
The Benson football team closed out the 2021 season with a 20-0 loss at KMS in the Section 4A quarterfinals. The Braves came into the game as the fifth seed while the Saints were seeded fourth thanks to a 27-14 win over Benson earlier in the season.
Upsala-Swanville Area (6-2) earned the top seed and a first-round bye in the Section 4A Tourney, followed by BBE (5-3), Browerville-EV (4-4), KMS, Benson, Parkers Prairie, and LPGE.
BBE went on to earn the section title with a win over USA, but then lost in the state quarterfinals.
The Braves went 3-6 this year. Benson was shut out in the season opener at Kimball (42-0), but then came back to rout Long Prairie-GE (42-14) and BBE (40-12) in two of the most well-played games of the season for Benson.
The next three weeks weren’t as kind as Benson fell to Browerville-EV (57-19), KMS (27-14), and BOLD (36-9) while being outscored 120-42. Benson broke the three-game losing streak with a 37-0 shutout of Maple Lake during Senior Night on Brock Field, but the Braves ended the season with a 42-6 loss at ACGC and a 20-0 loss at KMS in the section quarterfinals.
Kimball Area won this year’s sub-district title with a perfect 8-0 record after routing USA in the regular-season finale. BOLD (7-1) was next followed by Upsala-Swanville Area (6-2), Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (5-3), Browerville-EV (4-4), Benson and ACGC (both 3-5), KMS (2-6), and Maple Lake and LPGE (both 1-7).
