Carlson misses out on chance for All-America
Zach Carlson, a 2015 graduate of KMS High School and senior at South Dakota State University, is one of many student-athletes who have been affected by the COVID-19 shutdown. Carlson had 201 career wrestling victories at KMS High School, which ranks him third on the all-time list.
Carlson went on to wrestle at South Dakota State where he was in the midst of his senior season with the Jackrabbits and was set to wrestle in the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships after placing second at 184 pounds in the Big 12 Conference.
Four days after the runner-up finish, he learned that the NCAA Championships had been canceled.
Carlson’s goal had been to achieve All-America status, which means he would have had to place among the top 8 in the Division I Tourney. “It’s really hard; I don’t know what words I can describe it with,” Carlson said. “I had this goal for five years and it gets taken away and it’s out of my control. I felt I had a really good chance to place in the top eight. It’s really hard...”
