Braves edge Lakers in playoff opener, 39-38

The Benson girls basketball team opened up the Section 3AA Tourney with a 39-38 victory over Minnewaska Area, Saturday night at home.  The Braves were seeded fourth in its half of the section and the Lakers were seeded fifth.

Benson led 28-21 at halftime before the two teams combined for only 28 points in the second half with the Braves scoring 11 points on seven free-throws and two field goals.

Benson, which fell to Hancock earlier in the week to end the regular-season (61-54), advances to the sub-section semifinals this Thursday at 6 p.m. at Minnewaska Area High School against top-seeded and state-ranked NLS.  Benson lost to NLS earlier this season, 68-33...
