Brave name, logo fate to be decided by Friday

Friday is the deadline for the state’s 11 Native American tribes and the Tribal Nations Education Committee to submit their stand on a school’s use of names or symbols linked to Native American culture. District 777’s public schools have asked that they grant them an exception for the use of the Braves name and its logo, which depicts a capital letter B with a feather draped over the right side.
As of Monday night’s District 777 Board of Education meeting, Supt. Dennis Laumeyer said that three of the tribes have responded to the district’s request to keep the name. While none has given an outright “no” to the district’s request, he said that some clarification is needed.
