The Benson VFW team

Lead Summary

The Benson VFW team had three wins and one loss during the second week of action.  The VFW team, which had gone 1-3 to open up the season, swept Ortonville in a doubleheader in Benson last Monday night, 6-5 and 6-1, and then split with the Alexandria 15’s team last Tuesday in Benson, winning the first game 11-1 and losing the second 14-1.  Only the first game of each doubleheader counts for the official league standings.
Benson, now 3-3 overall, was set to host Willmar I at 6 p.m., Tuesday, June 25 (yesterday) followed by a game at Madison, Tuesday, July 2.
During the doubleheader sweep of Ortonville, Benson won the first game in eight innings, getting the tying run in the seventh inning on a steal of home by Jacob Connelly, and then getting the gamewinner in the eighth inning on an RBI-single by Taner Gimberlin.
Connelly also picked up the win on the mound, pitching one inning of relief of Brady Young, who pitched the first seven innings and allowed nine walks, four hits, five runs (four earned) with nine strikeouts.
Offensively, Gimberlin was 3-for-5 with two stolen bases and an RBI, while adding one hit each were Aaron Ahrndt and Adam Lindahl.  Benson also had the benefit of five walks, including two by Young and three by Trevor Berreau.
Benson also won the second game against Ortonville, 6-1, as Connelly earned the win with relief help from Brett Sulier.   Benson had two hits each from Andrew Lindahl and Justin Goossen, and one each from Sulier, Gimberlin, and Ahrndt.
•  The next night, Benson took on the Alexandria 15’s team, winning the first game, 11-1, but losing the second, 14-1.
Connor Staton earned the complete-game win in the first game, giving up two hits and one unearned run with two walks and six strikeouts.
