Benson girls fall to Ortonville, Sauk Centre

The Benson girls basketball team lost a pair of games last week to drop to 1-6 overall.  The Braves lost a heartbreaker at home against Ortonville last Tuesday night after leading for most of the game, 44-41.
Benson bounced back with a good effort at Sauk Centre, Friday, losing to the state-ranked Mainstreeters, 54-34.
“I was so proud of how the girls came ready to play against Sauk Centre and jumped out to a 5-0 lead,” Benson head coach Adam Foslien said.  “Hopefully, we can continue to build the confidence heading into the holiday break.”
Benson does not have any games scheduled for this week, but does play at Upsala, Thursday, Dec. 30 for its final game of 2021.
Ortonville 44, Benson 41
Ortonville rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit (24-13) to beat the Braves last Tuesday night in Benson, 44-41.  It was the first victory of the season for the Trojans, who won despite going 10-of-31 from the free-throw line.
There were a total of 44 fouls and 62 free-throws attempted during the game.
Benson led for most of the game, but Ortonville used a 31-17 advantage in the second half to take the lead late in the game.
The Braves retook the lead a little later, but a three-pointer by Ortonville with under a minute left gave the Trojans a three-point lead and Benson’s last-second three-pointer hit the back of the rim and bounced out to give Ortonville the win.
Madi Wrobleski had 11 points, three rebounds, two assists, and five steals to lead the Braes, who shot 25 percent from the field (13-for-52), including just 1-of-19 from long range.
Marley Rush added eight points and six boards, while Kaylin Grube had six points and six rebounds, and Adysen Himley added six points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Ortonville held a 39-34 rebounding edge and also had a 19-17 advantage in steals.  The Trojans won despite turning the ball over 35 times compared to 27 turnovers for the Braves.
Mya Kurkosky chipped in with five points, five rebounds, and five steals for Benson, which dropped to 1-5 overall, while Presley Nygaard had five points, three rebounds, and four steals.
