Avian flu hits five counties in the state

By The Associated Press, MPR News Staff and Monitor-News Publisher Reed Anfinson
Highly pathogenic avian influenza is now spreading in Minnesota with the two latest cases confirmed in two of Swift County’s neighbors – Kandiyohi and Lac qui Parle counties.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture emergency response team was to arrive in Minnesota Wednesday, and will be deployed for at least three weeks. It will support the state’s experts from the Minnesota Board of Animal Health and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
Their work will involve quarantining infected flocks, disease surveillance and coordinating logistics and finances.
