KMS volleyball team opens up season, Friday

Although Samantha Gjerde (4) is gone from the team, the Saints do return a number of letterwinners, including Mallory Rudningen (14) and Katie Krieger (back).

The KMS volleyball team is set to get off to an early start this year with a match Friday, Aug. 25 at home against Kimball Area.  The Saints are also set to play at Minnewaska Area, Monday, Aug. 28, and at Benson, Tuesday, Aug. 29.  The KMS volleyball team finished the 2016 season with a 13-18 overall record and were also 3-8 in the always-tough Camden North Conference.  However, you could also say the team finished 12-6, if you count the matches where the team played at full strength.

KMS lost six seniors to graduation from last year’s team -- Riley Hart, Samantha Gjerde, Tori Everson, Alexis Lamecker, Molly Jeppesen, and Kaitlin Ilgen....

Braves open up season Aug. 29 versus KMS

Grace Lee is one of only four players who played for the Braves last year and return for 2017.

The Benson volleyball team is set to open up the season with a home match against KMS, Tuesday, Aug. 29.  The Braves, coached by Shannon Schmidt, are coming off a 4-20 record from a season ago, which also included a 3-11 mark within the WCC.

Benson lost nine members of last year’s team to graduation, including almost the entire starting lineup.  Gone from last year’s team are Nicole Berens, Megan Amundson, Sophie Ascheman, Amanda Nissen, Presley Gonnerman, Kaitlyn Knutson, Danielle Himley, Victoria Pagel, and Dana Rud.

Nissen, Ascheman, Amundson, Gonnerman, Pagel, and Himley were the top six hitters for the Braves last season, while Knutson had the second-most set assists, Amundson, Berens, Ascheman, and Nissen were the top four in digs and serve returns, Pagel led the team in blocks, and six of the top seven servers were Berens, Ascheman, Amundson, Nissen, Knutson, and Gonnerman.
