Ortonville rallies for 59-53 win over Braves

Benson boys fail to win first game despite holding late lead
 

The Benson boys basketball team dropped three games last week, although they had a good chance to earn their victory of the season during one of the games.  The Braves opened up last week’s action with a 64-27 loss at home to Melrose last Tuesday night, but came back two nights later to play a tough Ortonville team strong before losing late, 59-53.

The week came to an end with a 61-45 loss at Lakeview, which dropped the Braves’ overall record to 0-17 and WCC mark to 0-8.

Benson was set to play at Paynesville, Thursday before hosting BOLD, Friday, and then hosting YME (1-13 record), Monday, Feb. 5 in what could be the Braves’ best chance at picking up a win this season....

BKMS gymnasts split home meets

With the Melrose Area gymnasts looking on after they had completed the balance beam, Mariah Ahrndt goes airborne on the floor exercise.

The Benson-KMS gymnastics team split a pair of conference matches last week against Long Prairie-GE-Browerville and Melrose.

The Fighting Braves topped LPGE, 136.6-124.6 last Monday night in Benson but three nights later, Benson-KMS fell to state-ranked Melrose 140.05-134.2
Benson-KMS, 4-1 overall in dual matches, was set to compete at NLS, Tuesday (yesterday).  The final home match is set for Friday, Feb. 2 vs. Hendricks....

Lady Storm fall to Windom Area, 5-0

The MBA girls hockey team fell to 1-13 overall with a 5-0 home loss to Windom Area, Saturday at the Benson Civic Center.  

Windom scored two in the first and three more in second period and handed the Lady Storm their third shutout of the season.

In the results that follow is a boxscore of the 3-2 loss at Fairmont, Saturday, Jan. 13, which was received too late for last week’s paper.  Eighth-grader Taryn Picht had both goals for MBA.

This week, the Lady Storm are set to host Crookston, Friday at the Lee Community Center in Morris.  The final home game in Benson is Saturday, Feb. 3 versus Worthington....

Saints top Benson in battle for Swift County

The Benson boys basketball team dropped two more decisions last week to fall to 0-11 overall.  The Braves, who are also 0-4 in the WCC, lost at Montevideo last Tuesday night, 55-29, and at KMS, Thursday, 62-32.

After scoring 50 and 59 points in back-to-back games in late December, the Braves have been held under 40 points in their last four games.

Benson has three home games scheduled this week, beginning with a game against Morris Area-CA, Tuesday, and continuing with ACGC, Thursday, and Sauk Centre, Friday....

Last-second shot gives Atwater-CGC Falcons 44-42 victory over Benson girls

Atwater-CGC rallied from a 23-18 halftime deficit to edge the Braves in the finals seconds last Tuesday night in Benson, 44-42.  Three nights later, Benson trailed only 17-10 at halftime before losing at Morris Area-CA, 49-31.

Benson, which fell to 1-11 overall and 0-7 in the WCC, should have a good chance to pick up win No. 2 this week with a home game against Prinsburg CMCS (1-11 record), Monday, followed by a game at KMS (4-11), Tuesday, and a game at Lakeview (5-10), Friday....

Zosel reaches 100 career wins during Parkers Prairie Invitational

Aaron Zosel earned his 100th win, Saturday.  He is pictured with co-coaches Randy Weber (left) and Scott Thompson.
Adam Zosel (right) was back in action, Thursday night, for the first time since suffering a broken leg during the football season.  His brother, Aaron, reached 100 career victories two days later at the Parkers Prairie Invite.

Aaron Zosel became the 12th Benson High School wrestler to reach 100 career victories at the Parkers Prairie Invitational, Saturday.  

Zosel went 3-1 to place second at 145 pounds, earning his 100th career win in the quarterfinals earlier in the day.

Zosel, who improved to 18-4 for the season, joined Adam Zosel and Jared Knutson as runners-up for Benson, while Dylan Stewart was third at 182 pounds.

Benson, which placed fifth of 11 teams at the Parkers Prairie Invitational, lost two dual meets earlier in the week to drop to 2-5 overall.

Benson fell to ACGC last Tuesday night, 57-19, and also dropped a close decision at home to BOLD, Thursday, 38-36.

The Braves were set to compete at the Quad County triangular, Tuesday with Canby also competing, before wrestling at Minnewaska Area, Friday....

Braves’ offense still struggling in losses to BOLD, LQP

The Benson boys basketball team lost twice last week to drop to 0-9 overall and 0-3 in the WCC.  The Braves fell at BOLD, Thursday night, 73-32, and also dropped a 71-46 decision to Lac qui Parle on the home floor, Saturday.

The Braves are set to play one of the weaker teams in the area when they play at Montevideo (0-8 record), Tuesday, and Benson also is set to play at KMS, Thursday....

KMS boys top Canby for fifth win of season

Regan Carlson had 33 points to lead KMS to a 76-51 win over Canby last week for the Saints’ fifth victory of the season, tying last year’s season total.

The KMS boys basketball team had a busy week last week, playing three games and going 1-2 overall.  The Saints opened up last week’s action with a 76-51 win over Canby last Tuesday night, but the week ended with a pair of losses to Prinsburg CMCS, Thursday, 67-61, and to Lakeview, Friday, 73-58.

The Saints, now 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the Camden North Conference, have already matched their win total from a year ago.

KMS has another three games scheduled this week, including a game at Tracy Area, Tuesday, a game at home against Benson Thursday, and at RTR, Friday....

BKMS gymnasts fourth at Marshall Invitational

The Benson-KMS gymnastics team placed fourth at the 8-team Marshall Invitational, Saturday.  Willmar, the state’s top-ranked team in Class A, won the meet with 145.825 points, while Worthington, ranked fifth in state, was second with 142.875 points.

Benson-KMS is set to host Long Prairie-GE, Thursday in the Benson Armory before preparing for another home meet the following Thursday, Jan. 18 against Melrose Area....

Benson wrestling team falls short vs. MAHACA

Grant Evenson (top) records a pin during the Braves Wrestling Classic.  The Braves are set to host an Alumni Night match against BOLD, Thursday.

Morris Area-CA-Hancock stormed out to a 24-0 lead after three matches and held on for a 45-30 victory over Benson in a WCC wrestling matchup, Friday at Morris.

Benson came back to win six matches, but it was too little, too late.  There were four matches that went the distance and Benson won two of them, but the Tigers countered with five pins and two forfeits.

The Braves, who dropped to 2-3 overall in duel matches and 0-2 in the WCC, have three meets on tap this week.

Benson was set to compete at ACGC, Tuesday, host BOLD, Thursday, and wrestle at the Parkers Prairie Invitational, Saturday....
