Roger A. Johnson passed away peacefully August 27, 2022 at The Villas in St. Louis Park, Minnesota where he was receiving physical therapy for his heart. He attained the age of 87 years, 10 months, 27 days, and 10 hours.

Roger was born in Benson, Minnesota to Ornel George and Violet Christina (Larson) Johnson,  October 31, 1934. He was baptized by Pastor Peder Dreyer,  December 9, 1934, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Benson and was confirmed in the Christian faith by Pastor Nesheim,  June 26, 1949, at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Benson. He was a proud member of the class of 1953 in Benson and enjoyed returning to attend the many class reunion celebrations.

As a young boy, he lived in a house on 16th street with his mom, dad, and his two sisters, Marlys (Pearson) of Montevideo, and his baby sister Janice (deceased).

Roger married Roselle Evelyn Mills,  January 27, 1954. This union was blessed with four children: Douglas, Michael, David, and “Daddy’s little Pumpkin” Stacy.

As a young man, dad enjoyed working with Hjalmer Erickson and his father at the Southside Meat Market for many years until he joined Darold, Jack, Denny, Roger, Lolly, and the rest of the gang at Darold’s Red Owl in 1957 until he retired in 1987. He joined the Benson Fire Department  January 1, 1962 and was proud to have retired at the rank of Lieutenant in 1984.

He married Shirley Simonson (formerly of Benson) August 8, 1998. They lived together in Minnetonka, Minnesota until they purchased a home in Pharr, Texas. Roger loved to call himself a Winter Texan and he and Shirley shared residences in both Minnesota and Texas for 26 years.

Roger was very active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a lifetime member of the James Ballentine V.F.W. Auxiliary, the Auxiliary Military Order of the Cooties, and a 16-year member of the Sons of The American Legion in Texas.

Dad lived a simple life. He avoided confrontation whenever possible. He didn’t expect or demand much, but when he was camping or on his golf cart in Texas, he was King of the World!!  He enjoyed hunting, camping, playing cards, and most of all…….PEOPLE!!  He would light up a room as he walked in and proceeded to greet both people he knew and even people he didn’t! Dad loved spending time with his friends and with his family.

Roger has left behind to mourn: his wife Shirley; his brother Dennis (Linda) of Houston, Texas; his sister Marlys of Montevideo; his children: Douglas of Fargo, Michael (Kathy) of Benson, David (Nicole) of Eden Prairie, Stacy of Benson, his daughter in law Marsha of Fargo; his stepchildren: Julie (Dan) Skjonsby of Prior Lake; Steve (Julie) Green; his grandchildren: Christopher (Annie) of Fargo, ND; Stephanie of Fargo, ND; Kaley (Matt) Saari of St. Michael; Zachary (Teri) of Renville; Brittany (David) Mugg of St. Michael, Trevor and Andrew Johnson of Eden Prairie, Michaela (Jared) Steffenson of Belgrade, Ross (Bridget) Grussing of Willmar and Sara Larson of Benson; his step-grandchildren: Audrey (Tony) Gewedik of Buffalo, Jessica (Chris) Chica of St. Anthony; his great-grandchildren: Scarlett, Gabriel, Asher and Kanan Johnson,  Lilly, Grace, and Carter Saari, Hattie and Etta Mugg and Rowan Steffenson; his step-great-grandchild Peyton.

Roger was a loving son, husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Even though missing you hurts terribly, we will always think of you with joy and gladness because of the light you brought into our lives.
