The Benson football team ended the 2018 season with a 33-13 loss at Minnewaska Area in the Section 5AA quarterfinals, Oct. 23.  The Braves were seeded seventh in the 7-team section, and the Lakers were seeded second.  The Braves closed out the season with an 0-9 overall record, which included an 0-7 mark within the Mid State White sub-district.

The Braves had at least two good chances to earn a victory.  One was a 60-56 loss at Sauk Centre in which Benson fell one-short of a game-winning touchdowns in the final two plays of the game.

The other was a 35-34 overtime loss to Montevideo in which Benson led 28-14 at halftime and also was tied at 28-28 late in the game with the Braves having possession at the Monte 7-yard line with 23 seconds left.

BOLD won this year’s Mid-State title with a perfect 7-0 record, while Minnewaska Area was second (6-1), Osakis third (5-2), Morris Area fourth (4-3), ACGC fifth (3-4), Montevideo sixth (2-5), Sauk Centre seventh (1-6), and Benson eighth (0-7).

Paynesville and Minnewaska Area went on to play for the Section 5AA title, while BOLD played Minneota for the Section 3A title.

Seniors lost to graduation from this year’s Benson football team are Matt Goossen, Jared Knutson, Hunter Gonnerman, Riley Grube, Devon Liles, Alex Wrobleski, Cole Petrick, and Matt Ebnet.  “We will miss our seniors next fall for their leadership on and off the field, but know that they will be successful in their new adventures and activities,” coach Gonnerman said....
