For the second week in a row the Benson football team gave up eight touchdowns.  This time, however, the Braves came through with just one of their own, resulting in a 56-8 loss to Osakis during a battle between sub-district teams in Benson, Friday night.

Jacob Backes, of Osakis, also became the second runningback in a row to rush for four touchdowns.  Backes had 194 yards rushing on only eight carries, scoring on TD runs of 49, 7, 43, and 55 yards.

“We started out with a nice drive to open the game and were able to move the football through the air with short passes, but were unable to get across the goalline in the first quarter,” Benson head coach Scott Gonnerman said.  “Will Enderson did a nice job of reading the defense and making some quick throws to different wide receivers.  Jared Knutson, Matt Tolifson, and Matt Goossen all had early catches in the game for us.  Osakis did a great job in the second half.”

Benson fell to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the sub-district with the loss, while Osakis improved to 1-1 and 2-1.  Leading the sub-district after two league games are BOLD, Morris Area-CA, and Minnewaska Area, all with 2-0 record.

The Braves are set to play at Morris Area and BOLD over the next two Fridays, beginning with a game at 7 p.m., this Friday at Big Cat Stadium.

“Morris is a run first team, but has the ability to throw the ball as well (usually play action pass),” Gonnerman said.  “They have a great 1-2 punch in fullback Matt McNeill (SR 215 lbs) and halfback Camden Arndt (SR 200 lbs).

“This is also our annual Tackle Cancer Game with proceeds going to the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund.  There will be Benson and MACA buckets at the game to put donations in to Tackle Cancer....”
