Memorial Services for Marjorie C. Fitz, 96, of Benson, Minnesota (formerly of Fairmont) were held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 11, 2018 at the United Methodist Church in Fairmont. Burial was held at Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont. Visitation was held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 11, 2018 at the United Methodist Church in Fairmont.

Marjorie passed away Saturday morning, August 4, 2018 at Meadow Lane Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Benson.             

Marjorie Catherine Koons was born March 31, 1922, in Kossuth County, Iowa.  She was the daughter of William M. and Bessie (Work) Koons.  At age four, she moved with her family to Granada, Minnesota.  She started school in Granada and most of her elementary schooling was in rural districts of Martin County.  She attended grades 4-8 at District #47 in Silver Lake Township.  She later attended Fairmont High School, graduating with the class of 1940.

Marjorie was a very active 4-H club member as a teenager, winning several State and National trips.  Marjorie was a Minnesota State Dress Revue Queen.

After high school, she worked as a retail clerk at the J.C. Penney and Bob Wallace Mercantile stores, both of Fairmont.  

June 9, 1947, she was married to Zane E. Fitz at the Methodist Church in Fairmont.  Their first home was in Jackson, but they moved back to Fairmont and lived in Zane’s birthplace home for 52 years before moving to a smaller home. In May of 2017, she moved to Benson to be closer to her son Edward.

Marjorie was a lifelong member of the Fairmont Methodist Church and active in United Methodist Women, church circle, and she taught Sunday school and helped with youth fellowship.  Marjorie was a Girl Scout leader and also had a Cub Scout den. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, reading, plants and gardening.

Left to cherish her memory are her son: Edward (Suzanne) Fitz of Benson; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Finnette (Al) Walker of Roscoe, IL, Doris Shennum of St. Paul; sisters-in-law, Evelyn (Koons) Altman of Welcome and Rita Fitz of Fairmont; a special foster child, Julie Brunner of Sherburn, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, William Koons, Sr. and Bessie Koons; her husband of 67 years, Zane E. Fitz; daughter: Barbara Jo Fitz; sisters: Maxine Conklin, Hazel Wieland and Mildred Turner, brother: Willaim Koons, Jr.; brothers-in-law, Robert Conklin, Kenneth Turner, Owen Fitz, David Fitz, Gilbert Wieland, Harry Shennum and Jotham Watson.

The Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont assisted the family with arrangements.
