Ricard, Schiller, Ahrndt earn BKMS girls track awards

The Benson-KMS girls track and field team recently announced its season-ending awards for 2018.  Seniors lost to graduation from this year’s girls track teams are Ellie Schiller, Chasey Arndt, Amiah Akerson, and Dacotah Rohner

•  Selected as MVP of the girls’ track team for 2018 is sophomore Claire Ricard, who competed in the 300 meter hurdles, pole vault, discus, and relays this season.
She had her hand in all of her team’s points at the section meet this season, including a third-place finish in the 300 meter hurdles with a time that was a half-second away from qualifying to state.

Earning the Most Improved Award was Ellie Schiller, who competed in the shot put and discus, and selected for the Coaches’ Award was Mariah Ahrndt, who competed in the high jump, long jump, triple jump, and relays.

•  The girls team, coached by Lisa Kurtzbein and Jill McGeary, placed second of five teams at the NLS Invitational, fourth of eight teams at the YME Invitational, and fifth at a pair of early-season Benson Invitationals.

Benson-KMS sent six entries to the Section 6A Meet where Claire Ricard highlighted the Fighting Braves’ efforts by placing in three events.

Ricard came within a half-second of qualifying to state in the 300 meter hurdles, finishing third with a time of 48.83, and was also sixth in the pole vault (8-6) and ran on the fifth-place 1600 meter relay team with Mariah Ahrndt, Allie Mitteness, and Abbie Mitteness.

That gave Benson-KMS all nine of its points during the meet, placing the team 12th of 23 teams that earned at least one point....
