LUVERNE H. NORBY

LuVerne H. Norby, age 88, of Benson, Minnesota died Saturday, February 11, 2017, at Bethesda Nursing Home.  Visitation will be from 5 – 7 p.m., Friday, February 17, 2017, and will continue from 10 – 11 a.m., followed by the funeral at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 18, 2017, at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson.  Interment will be in the Swenoda Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church and The Gideons International.

LuVerne Herbert Norby was born on April 14, 1928, to Herbert A. Norby and Julia E. (Holstad) Norby, in Swenoda Township, Swift County.  He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church of Swenoda Township, by Rev. M. O. Andrews and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, in Benson, by Rev. Harold Nasheim.  He attended Country School, District 49 in rural Swift County and the West Central School of Agriculture at Morris.

On September 4, 1948, LuVerne was united in marriage to Arlene (Tatge) Norby, at Our Saviors’ Lutheran Church in Benson, by Rev. Nasheim.  They enjoyed 68 years of marriage with celebrations for their 25th, 50th, 65th as well as a rib eye steak on most every anniversary day each year in between.

LuVerne farmed for most of the years of his life and was co-owner, with Arlene, of the Benson Livestock Exchange and the help of their six sons.  After retiring to live in Benson, he farmed a small acreage and helped his two sons on their farms.  He also drove the Heartland Express Bus for the city of Benson.   He was active in the church serving in various offices and committees, and participated in various Bible studies at the church. He served on the school boards of both the country schools and Benson schools and was instrumental in starting the Ag Program in the Benson Schools. He was an active member of the Gideons—Montevideo Camp where he held several different offices and was a Swift County Commissioner.  He loved the land and farming, liked restoring machinery and keeping it polished, serving and being with family and people, concerts, traveling and grand parenting.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene; daughter Julie Sponsler of River Falls WI; son Glen (Shauna) Norby of Chehalis WA; son Eldon (Heather) Norby of Kerkhoven; son Pastor Dean (Elizabeth) Norby of Edinburgh Scotland; daughter Lynnette Tessem of Benson; son John Norby of Benson; son Steven (Jodi) Norby of Zimmerman MN; and son Nathan (Nicole) Norby of Benson.  Seventeen grandchildren also survive—Reed (Becca)Sponsler, Holly Sponsler of Louisiana, Luke Sponsler of River Falls; Brianna, Ethan, Dylan Norby of Willmar and Kerkhoven; Ben, Miriam, Andrew Norby of Edinburgh; Jake Tessem and Leah Tessem of the Twin Cities; Wyatt Norby of Zimmerman; Kayla, Austin, Beau, Brooke and Joshua Norby of Fargo and Benson.  Three great-grandchildren—Damian, Weston, and Sadie Sponsler of River Falls; and his brother, Roger Norby of Benson, two nieces and their families.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Gordon; sister-in-law, Shirley; daughter, Mary Kay Norman; and many uncles and aunts.
