The Benson football team is down to its final regular-season game after losing at home to Minnewaska Area, Friday night on Brock Field, 30-7, during the annual Senior Night and Parents’ Night.  The Braves showed a lot of promise when they pulled out a 28-26 triple-overtime victory at YME, but since that time, the Sting have gone on to go 4-1, while Benson has lost five in a row.

Benson was tied with Minnewaska Area late in the first half, 7-7, after scoring a touchdown with 58 seconds left, but the Lakers raced down the field and kicked a field goal to go up 20-7, and then added 20 more points in the second half to win going away.

“Minnewaska was able to control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and complete some big third-down opportunities throughout the game,” Benson coach Scott Gonnerman said.  “We thought we were going into halftime tied at 7, but we were called for a running-into-the-kicker penalty on their first try at a field goal with no time left on the clock, and on their second try, they made it.  That gave them a lot of momentum going into halftime.”
