Karen was born on October 14, 1941, near Murdock, Swift County, Minnesota, the daughter of Orville and Adora (Rice) Quale.  She grew up in Swift County, and graduated from Kerkhoven High School in 1959.
On July 8, 1960, she was united in marriage to Dean Mellgren at West Norway Lake Lutheran Church in Sunburg.  Following their marriage, they lived in Minneapolis and rural Sunburg before moving to their current home in 1968.  For 32 years, Karen was a devoted and compassionate caregiver at Swift County DAC in Benson, retiring in 2007.
Karen was baptized on November 16, 1941 and confirmed on May 29, 1955.  She was a member of Kerkhoven Lutheran where she was active with the altar guild, WELCA and circle.  Karen was always concerned about her church and was always willing to help whenever needed.
Her hobbies were flower gardening, playing golf, an “occasional” trip to the casino, crossword and jigsaw puzzles.  She also volunteered at the Swift County Historical Society.  Her love of her family was obvious, but her unfailing love of her grandchildren can’t be counted or compared with anything.
Surviving are her husband, Dean; children: Dana (and Kimberly) Mellgren of Onalaska, WI; Shawn (and Alena) Mellgren of W. Richland, WA; and Resa (and Donnie) Bittner of Pelican Rapids; eight grandchildren: Jeremy (and fiancé, Jeni Darling) Mellgren, Branden (and Holly) Mellgren, Tabitha (and Chad) Luedke, Tandy (and Kurt) Broughton, Libby Bittner, Dustin Bittner, Dylan Beach-Bittner and Dalton Beach-Bittner; nine great grandchildren(and counting, 10 in July).  Also surviving are her sister, Juanita and (and Donny) Meulebroeck of Sauk Centre and brother, David (and Jane) Quale of Kerkhoven.
She was preceded in death by her parents, great granddaughter, Ellie Crystal Mellgren; sister, Dianne (and Gene) Baker, and brother, Gene Quale.
