MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL SCHOOL BOARD MEETING
INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 777,
Benson, Minnesota
Monday, April 20, 2015 - 5:30 p.m. -
Benson Junior High Auditorium

The public meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by Chair Chad Payne.  Members present:  Andy Abner, Jodi DeJong-Hughes, Jason Madden, Bill McGeary, Al Pagel, Chad Payne, Gary Williams.
Also present:  Dennis Laumeyer, Dave Benson, Robert Neuman, Paul Youngquist, Greg Crowe, Andrea Uhl, approximately 50 community members.
Superintendent Dennis Laumeyer introduced the board members, staff, financial advisors and architect to the audience.  He presented Benson Points of Pride and explained the upcoming building bond special election on May 12, 2015 at $18.7 million, adding that the current interest rate is very low. The four areas of improvement were explained: To reduce maintenance costs, improve school security, update student learning spaces and increase preschool learning opportunities. Robert Neuman, maintenance supervisor, explained in detail some of the maintenance issues in the Jr. High building.  Dennis reviewed the project summary, including costs and the plan to enhance learning areas for the 21st century. He stated the members of the school board have been intentional, careful and diligent in planning for the long-term needs of the school district. Greg Crowe and Andrea Uhl of Ehlers and Associates, Inc., the financial advisors, encouraged everyone to contact them for the proper calculation on tax impacts and rebate information.  Dennis explained that it’s unfortunate the legislature has set it up the way it is and encouraged everyone to contact legislators to ask for ag land tax relief.  He presented comparison charts of area districts to show that taxes paid in the Benson School District are lower compared to neighboring districts and opened it up for questions from community members.
