He was born in Fonda, Iowa, to Raymond and Lyra Cleland. The family moved to a farm near Danvers in 1951. He graduated from Benson High School in 1956, married in 1958 and had four children. He farmed near Danvers until 1965, when the family moved to Hoffman.
Darl worked as a salesman for Occo Feeds for many years before operating Cleland’s Meet N Eat in Hoffman. After moving to Glenwood in 1982, he began working for Osborne Industries until retiring in 2007.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing dice, dominoes and card games with family and friends. His hearty laugh will be remembered by many. He loved to help others, no matter what, and his garage was the Home Depot of the neighborhood.
He had many martin houses and loved his birds. He was known for pulling your leg, jokes and stories and would strike up a conversation with anyone. He was a friend to all and inspiration to many.
