David LeRoy Peterson

David L. Peterson, 75, of Benson, Minnesota died Monday evening, December 27, 2021 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Visitation was held Monday,  January 3, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson, followed by a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. Interment was in the Benson City Cemetery. Zniewski Funeral Home of Benson is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials to: Benson High School Trap Team, c/o Andy Abner, 513 N. Highway 29, Benson, Minnesota, 56215.

Steven Burns

Steven Burns, 72, of Fergus Falls, Minnesota passed away unexpectedly December 23, 2021 at the Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.  He is survived by his wife, Barbara and brother, Rodney (Loretta) of Benson, Minnesota.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Delores Burns also of Benson.  
Steve was born in Benson, December 30, 1948 and graduated from Benson High School in 1967.  He joined the US Army and served three years while stationed in Germany.  He graduated from Willmar Vo-Tech. with a degree in Accounting.  He worked at Federated Telephone in Chokio and later at Ottertail Tel Com in Fergus Falls until his retirement.

Storm lose on the road to Detroit Lakes and Windom

The MBA boys hockey team fell twice on the road last week, losing at Detroit Lakes last Tuesday night, 7-3, and also losing at Windom Area, Thursday, 9-2.
The Storm, who are 3-5 overall, were set to host the Benson Boys Hockey Invitational, Tuesday (yesterday) and Wednesday (today).
The Storm were set to play Park Rapids at 4 p.m., Tuesday (yesterday) in its first game, while Prairie Centre and Mayville-Portland square off in the other semifinal game at 6 p.m. The winners of the semifinal games are set to play at 5 p.m., Wednesday (today) with the losers playing at 3 p.m.
•  In a correction to last week’s story, Chris Danielson was in goal during the Storm’s recent 6-3 win over Worthington, not the player listed.  He has been the goalie on record for all MBA’s games this year.

Benson girls resume play Thursday

The Benson girls basketball team is 1-6 overall heading into its final game of 2021.  The Braves did not have any games last week as they prepared for a Thursday contest at Upsala.
After that, Benson is set to host Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley, Tuesday, Jan. 4, play at Morris-CA, Thursday, Jan. 6, and host Lakeview for a rare Saturday game, Jan. 8.
Through the first seven games, the high point total for Benson is 17 points by Marley Rush during a 55-28 win over Dawson-Boyd in a game Madi Wrobleski added 16 points and Mya Kurkosky had 12.
Rush also has the high rebound total of 12 set twice against DB and also during a loss to Browerville during the Benson Case-IH Tourney.

Benson boys fall in close game to Lac qui Parle Valley

The Benson boys basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Lac qui Parle team, Thursday night in Benson, and the result was a 78-55 loss to the Eagles.
The Braves fell to 2-4 overall with the loss.  Benson has yet to play a conference game this season.
Lac qui Parle, which improved to 3-3 overall, had four players score in double figures, while Isaac Minchow was the only Braves to score in double figures, ending the game with 10 points.
Benson has four-straight road games scheduled, including two this week at the RTR Holiday Tourney, Tuesday (yesterday) and Wednesday (today).
The Braves were set to open up the RTR Tourney at 4 p.m., Tuesday (yesterday) against RTR, while Hancock and Martin County West play in the other semifinal.
The third place game is set for 4 p.m., Wednesday (today) with the championship game slated for 6 p.m.
