The meeting was called to order at 5:31 p.m. by Chair Brian Samuelson.  Members present:  Brian Samuelson, Bill McGeary, Gary Williams, Paul Carruth, Mary KW Langan and James Berens.  Members absent:  Eric Peterson.  Also present: Dennis Laumeyer, Mike Knutson, Garrett Schmidt, Katie Foley, Lori Eix, Reed Anfinson, Eric Ose, Aimee Thalberg, Crystal Erickson, Joyce Walstad, Mike Felt, Abby Ver Steeg.

KMS volleyball third at Underwood Tourney

The KMS volleyball team closed out the regular-season with a third-place finish at the Underwood Tournament, Thursday.  The Saints went 1-2 during pool play and then won a tiebreaker to earn a berth in the third-place match, which KMS won over Wheaton/Herman-Norcross in three games.

The Saints finished the regular season with a 7-20 record, going 6-8 over their final 14 matches to end the season on a high note.

The Section 6A Tourney is set to begin this week and the Saints are set to host a preliminary round match, Monday.  KMS earned the seventh seed in its sub-section and was set to host 10th-seeded Ashby (2-25) at 7 p.m., Monday with the winner moving on to face second-seeded Wheaton-HN at 7 p.m., Wednesday (tonight) in the sub-section quarterfinals...

Duncan and Helms win Section 3A doubles title and state berth

Senior Hannah Helms and sophomore Elise Duncan became the third doubles’ team at Benson or Benson-KMS to earn a berth at the State Girls Tennis Tournament.  Helms and Duncan won the Section 3A Individual Doubles’ Tourney with four-straight wins despite coming as the sixth seed.

Duncan, who is 7-17 overall this year playing mostly first singles, and Helms, who is 15-10 playing mostly second singles, will open up state action Thursday (tomorrow) and Friday at the Read-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

Mackenzie Weber and Abby Fragodt were the first to qualify to state doubles in 2006 and 2007 for the Benson or Benson-KMS girls tennis program, placing fourth and third overall during the Class A Tourney, while Lauren Alsaker and Catherine James qualified to state doubles in 2009, going 1-2 at state...

Braves fall to ACGC in regular-season finale; to play at KMS in 4A opener

The Benson football team fell to Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City last Wednesday night during the annual MEA football game, 42-6.  The Braves played without at least three of its starters during the game and also faced the task of battling wind, rain, and cold.

Benson stayed close through most of the first half before the Falcons scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to take charge of the game.

ACGC, which improved to 3-5 overall, outgained the Braves 364-39 and also had 11 first downs compared to just three for Benson, which was playing without Thomas Dineen, Brady DeHaan, and Ayden Ehmcke, all two-way starters, along with battling injuries for other players as well...

Housing Remains Pressing Rural Challenge

There are three fundamental challenges rural Minnesota faces in attracting workers and new residents who want to live away from the hustle, long commutes and dangers of a large metropolitan area.

They see a place where kids can grow and thrive in a safe environment; a place where their children have an opportunity to become a meaningful part of a team, or choir, or high school club.

To bring those families here we need more affordable housing, more child care and high speed internet. We may have made progress with the internet and child care, but housing remains the primary challenge.

COVID-19 cases straining rural clinics, hospitals, staffs

“It is still COVID, COVID everywhere,” Dr. Cindy Firkins Smith, vice president of rural health at Carris Health, told the Swift County Health Services Governing Board Monday night.

There were 104 COVID-19 positive patients throughout CentraCare’s system Monday morning. “That is a huge number,” she said. SCBHS is affiliated with CentraCare and its Carris facility in Willmar.

While the number of COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Minnesota is decreasing, it is a trend yet to be felt in much of rural Minnesota, she said. “The patients we have in our hospitals are really critically ill and they are spending a long time in the hospital...”
