Fighting For Our Local Papers

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar

By U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar

On May 7th of last year, the Hastings Star Gazette printed its last issue. The paper’s first issue as The Hastings Independent was published in 1857, a year before Minnesota gained statehood. Generations relied on papers like this for local news—they told you who was born and who died, whose daughter just broke the county record for the 400-meter freestyle, whose Holstein won a surprise ribbon at the State Fair, and how your local leaders voted.

My dad was a Minnesota newspaper columnist and sports reporter. Even though he worked his way up the ranks to interview everyone from Mike Ditka to Ronald Reagan to Ginger Rogers, he was always, as his managing editor put it, “a champion of those on the outside.”

But today, newspapers of all sizes are struggling and closing.

KMS baseball hoping for third title in a row

he KMS baseball team was set to open up the season Thursday, April 8 at home against MACCRAY, but that game was postponed meaning the new opener was Tuesday (yesterday) at RTR.    The Saints are coming off a state tournament berth in 2019 when the team placed fourth at state with a 21-4 overall record.  The Saints were also hoping for a great season in 2020, but the spring schedule was canceled due to COVID-19.
The KMS baseball team went 20-4 overall and 11-0 in the Camden Conference in 2018 and went 21-4 overall and 10-0 in the conference two springs ago.
The 2019 team earned the program’s third state berth, winning its first game at state before losing its next two to finish fourth in Class A.  The victory at state was the first in program history, and the 21 wins last season is the best in program history....
