County board votes to replace windows in the Courthouse

When it approved the bid of Sussner Construction for the $3.6 million renovation of the Swift County Courthouse, the board of commissioners left out the replacing of the building’s windows.

They knew the windows were not energy efficient and that people feel a “breeze” through some of them on cold days. Concerned with the cost of the project, commissioners decided to leave the window replacement for another time.

They did, however, vote to go ahead with a repair of the windows, which by itself was estimated to cost around $180,000.

But at its meeting last Tuesday, May 15, the board of commissioners decided with Sussner still working on the courthouse renovation, now was most cost effective time to put new windows in the building.

Benson softball loses final two regular-season games

Benson thirdbaseman Zoe Doscher can’t quite handle the throw to third as a Morris player arrives safely during an 11-1 victory by the Tigers.

The Benson softball team closed out the regular season with a pair of home losses last week against Morris Area (11-1) and West Central Area (7-3).

Benson, which lost its final three regular-season games, finished the regular season with a 7-8 overall record and was also 7-7 in the WCC to finish tied for third with Minnewaska Area.

“We have struggled with routine catches the last couple of games and need to clean that up before playoffs,” coach Barb Schwarz said.  “We have the athletic ability to be a solid team, but we need to make sure we are improving, learning the in’s and out’s of the game, and making the routine plays.  Our record has improved from last season, however, it could be much better.  We have had 3-4 games in which we have let the lead slip in the late innings.”

Are We A Less Thoughtful Society

Are we a less thoughtful, less civil society today than we used to be? Does the well-being of our neighbors matter little? Does our entertainment trump their peace of mind?

We would, unfortunately, have to answer that, “Yes, we are a less civilized society than we once were. We are much more self-absorbed, thoughtless individuals than existed a generation or two ago.”

It is surprising how much profanity we hear in public places these days. It doesn’t matter who is sitting at the next table – families with young children, a group of senior women out together, the minister from the local church, or “just plain old” folks from the community.

One of the common complaints you find in today’s City of Benson Police reports has to do with loud noise – music blaring away in someone’s house or apartment, or outside. Music thumping through the walls. Music blasting through the neighborhood.
