Hanson leads gymnasts during loss to Hendricks

With teammate Mariah Ahrndt sitting out due to an illness, Halle Hanson led the Fighting Braves last week against Hendricks, placing second in the all-around.

The Benson-KMS gymnastics team lost its last regular-season meet against Hendricks-RTR, Friday night in Benson, 136.35-132.575.  The Fighting Braves were competing without the services of their leading gymnast, sophomore Mariah Ahrndt, who was out with an illness.

Halle Hanson placed second in the all-around for Benson-KMS, while teammate Makenna Kelley was fourth.

The loss dropped the team’s record to 4-3 heading into this Saturday’s WCC Meet at Morris.  The Section 6A Meet is set for Saturday, Feb. 17 at Litchfield and the State Gymnastics Meet is set for Feb. 23-24 on the U of M campus.

“We are hoping to get our team healthy as we head into the postseason,” coach Kathy Ahrndt said.  “We have been hit hard by influenza.  Many of our athletes have been out sick for over a week.  We’re hoping to get our strength and stamina back before the tournaments....”

Weston Gjerde (right) gets set to dish off an assist during a recent game against Benson.

The KMS boys basketball team split its two games from last week, winning a home game against Buffalo Lake-HS last Monday night, 69-48, but falling in overtime at Dawson-Boyd one night later, 78-74, after leading by five with 20 seconds left in regulation.

The Saints are 9-9 overall and 4-8 in the Camden North Conference heading into their final eight regular-season games.  KMS won four-straight games earlier this season, but otherwise, has not won or lost more than two games in a row.

Braves still seeking first win after losses to Paynesville, BOLD

Austin Ose goes in for a layup just ahead of the block attempt by an opponent during a recent game in Benson.

The Benson boys basketball team is down to its last seven games to earn its first win of the season after losing twice last week.  The Braves lost at Paynesville, Thursday night, 57-47, and also fell to BOLD at home, Friday, 74-42.

The Braves are 0-19 overall and 0-9 in the WCC heading into their final six regular-season games, one at home against YME, Monday, Feb. 5, in what could be the best chance at a victory this season.

The visiting Yellow Medicine East Sting are 1-15 overall this season with its only win coming against Tracy Area, which is 2-15 overall.

Benson is also set to play at ACGC, Thursday before coming home again the following week for two games....

Knutson earns 100th win for Benson wrestlers during 49-21 loss to KMS

Jared Knutson (right) earned his 100th career win at KMS, Thursday, beating Michael Doubek, 4-3.
Jon Tostenson (right) controls Benson’s Mike Nagler during the Saints’ 49-21 victory, Thursday night in Kerkhoven.

The Benson wrestling team went 2-1 last week and also added another named to the 100-win club.  The Braves won both matches at the Barnesville triangular last Tuesday night, beating Barnesville (39-33) and Fertile-Beltrami (58-24).

Two nights later, the Braves lost a non-conference match at KMS, 49-21, in a match that saw Benson junior Jared Knutson record his 100th victory with a 4-3 win over KMS’ Michael Doubek.  A recap of the KMS match can be found in separate story.

Knutson became the 13th BHS wrestler to reach 100 wins.  The list includes his teammate, Aaron Zosel, who reached 100 wins earlier this season, and his uncle, Brian Knutson, who graduated in 2002 with 134 victories.  Knutson should have a great shot at making it among the top five by the time he graduates.

Benson is set to close out the regular season with a home triangular, Thursday (tomorrow) with Paynesville and Sauk Centre-Melrose....
