KMS goes 1-2 at state to place sixth

Members of the KMS wrestling team congratulate Ryan Torkelson (left) right after he clinched the win over Pipestone Area with an exciting pin.
Brandin Dahl, shown wrestling against Pierz, went 2-1 for KMS during the state team tourney and 0-2 during the state individual meet. He ended the season with a 39-4 record.

The KMS wrestling team finished sixth during the Class A Wrestling Tournament, Thursday at the Xcel Center in St. Paul.  The Saints fell to Pierz in the first round, 44-19, before coming back to edge Pipestone in the consolation semifinals, 37-36, and then losing to Kenyon-Wanamingo in the consolation championship, 37-19.

KMS, which beat Osakis (47-21), LPGE-Browerville (34-33), and BBE (43-23) to win the Section 5A title, ended the season with a 16-5 overall record.

It was the fourth state team berth for the KMS wrestling program in the last nine years.  KMS also qualified to state in 2009, winning the Class A title; in 2013, when the Saints went 1-2 to finish sixth; and last year when the team went 0-2.

Going 3-0 during the team tourney for the Saints was Will Magaard at 106 pounds, Dylan Rudningen at 138, and Derek Krieger at 160, while going 2-1 were  Caleb Collins at 145 pounds and Brandin Dahl at 170.

Pass Law to Ban Phone Use in Vehicles

Pass Law to Ban Phone Use in Vehicles

by Reed Anfinson
Publisher, Swift County Monitor-News

Driving between Benson and Clontarf we met three consecutive cars - not one of the drivers saw us pass by them. All three were glued to their phones not even glancing up as we flew by one another.

A deer jumping out of the ditch would have been in their windshield before they even saw it. Another driver approaching also on his or her phone could drift over the centerline and the two vehicles would hit head-on. A bicyclist on the side of the road could be hit and killed by a distracted driver drifting to the shoulder.

These aren’t made-up scenarios; they’ve happened and tragically they will happen again.

Public Notice - Elm Wood Piles

PUBLIC NOTICE
ELM WOOD PILES

Residents of Benson are hereby notified that all elm wood with bark intact must be burned or removed by April 1, 2017. Bark-intact elm wood can undo much of the progress the community has achieved so far in controlling Dutch Elm Disease. This wood is a breeding place for the elm bark beetles that carry Dutch Elm disease fungus to healthy trees. In the spring, adult beetles - up to 1,500 in a single fireplace log - emerge from diseased wood with the fungus clinging to their bodies. When the beetles fly to healthy elms to feed, they spread Dutch Elm disease to previously uninfected trees.
Because of this danger to healthy elms, the City has enacted an ordinance affecting the storage of elm wood. Bark-intact elm wood may be stored outside only between September 15 and April 1, (the dormant period for elm bark beetles). Once the wood has been debarked, it no longer violates the regulation.
